With things heating up in anticipation of the big opening day game, I thought a little levity from past Notre Dame coaches might be fun.

"A school without football is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall." Frank Leahy

"Lads, you're not to miss practice unless your parents died or you died." Frank Leahy

"Show me a good and gracious loser, and I'll show you a failure.” Knute Rockne

"The only qualifications for a lineman are to be big and dumb. To be a back, you only have to be dumb." Knute Rockne

"I've found that prayers work best when you have big players." Knute Rockne

It isn't necessary to see a good tackle. You can hear it.” Knute Rockne

Not Notre Dame related, but perhaps the greatest football related quote of all time:

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.” John Heisman

In today's era, is George O'Leary the closest to these coaches in terms of quotable quotes? Maybe Spurrier? Anyone else?

Nick Saban has had some good quotes, at least when he's cussed out the media.

And I would bet Friedgen has had some good quotes too.

More good'uns

Here's a few more from more recent times:

"At Georgia Southern, we don't cheat. That costs money and we don't have any." Erk Russell

"After you retire, there's only one big event left....and I ain't ready for that." Bobby Bowden

"The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely to be the one who dropped it." Lou Holtz

"Son, you've got a good engine, but your hands aren't on the steering wheel." Bobby Bowden

My favorite ND coach's quotes:

There are two kinds of people in the world, Notre Dame lovers and Notre Dame haters. And, quite frankly, they're both a pain in the ass. Dan Devine

Don't ever tell people about your problems. 90% don't care and the other 10% are glad you have them. Lou Holtz

“There are two kinds of people in the world, Nôtre Dame lovers and Nôtre Dame haters. And, quite frankly, they're both a pain in the ass.” - Dan Devine

“Though they're ranked No. 1, I still think they're underrated." - Dan Devine, talking up his opponent

"A lifetime contract for a coach means if you're ahead in the third quarter and moving the ball, they can't fire you." - Lou Holtz

"Motivation is simple. You eliminate those who are not motivated." - Lou Holtz

"No one has ever drowned in sweat." - Lou Holtz

"On this team, we're all united in a common goal: to keep my job." - Lou Holtz

These are not Notre Dame coaches, but 2 of my favorite football quotes:

"My only feeling about superstition is that it's unlucky to be behind at the end of the game." - Duffy Daugherty

"When I went to Catholic high school in Philadelphia, we just had one coach for football and basketball. He took all of us who turned out and had us run through a forest. The ones who ran into the trees were on the football team." - George Raveling

My best OLeary quote is "the only thing I won't tolerate from my players is if they lie." Opps. I don't know if he uses that one anymore.

O'Leary had some great ones.

"Recruiting is like shaving. You have to do it every day or you look like a bum."

i heard a great quote on CSTV's retrovision last night. it was after the 2000 FSU/Miami game, and they talked about the coach who took over Miami the next year (Coker), and they had Coker saying (i'm paraphrasing this), "i think the most important thing to a football team is character. And I believe that we (Miami) have a team of great character."

i laughed.

wait... he was serious?
