Over the years of running the option over yander in Nebraska...they put more than their fair share of lineman in the NFL.

So my question is: were they quicker/smaller type of linemen and will this have any consequence on what type of linemen GT recruits?

Would like to hear John's thoughts as well as others.

They were big ol' corn fed jokers. Nebraska has a fine OL tradition. They ran that "I Bone" option or a variation thereof for over 30 years, and produced many a great NFL Offensive Lineman.

Back in my day they were quicker and smaller say around 270ish. I played with Steinkuhler and guy was deceptively quick and fast. Remington another one.

Once they saw they could add weight with proper training excercise they say they could get upwords of around 290ish or so. I did see a couple years ago they had some hosses but the commentators kept saying they couldn't believe how quick they were coming off the ball. I want to say around the Solich era.

My thought is this.

there are 3 Nebraska OL in the NFL today.
1 is a backup that doesn't see much time
1 hasn't played a down at his position in the NFL for a couple years (partially due to injury)
1 is a key reserve for the Patriots at three positions (hochstein)

all 3 were from the solich or osborne era

for comparison GT has 2 in the nfl (3 but one is a long snapper)
UGA has 5
florida only has 1
UT has 5
Mich has 7
MD has 3
Wisc has 7

so 3 is ABOUT average for a D1A BCS school....not great not bad. The bigger traditional offense programs seem to have around 5 to 7.

Nebraska having 3 in an option offense is good. Truthfully, I would have expected more out of UF; and they only had 1. For a school the size and rep of Nebraska...I would have guessed numbers more around 5-7 like the Wisc, Mich, UT's of the world

I think you struck on the key here. There are 0 linemen from the Callahan era. That is a 4 year gap where I suspect Wisc, Mich, and UT have all placed 1 or 2 lineman into the NFL. I think this is more an indictment of how bad Callahan did recruiting and training in-state linemen.

If you believe the rumors more like steroid fed lineman. They used to take a guy coming at 250 and have hime at 300+ real quick
