that by keeping B O'B on staff and hiring an NFL Offensive Coordinator would hurt our Offense?

Can someone explain this to me?

What is going on with our coaching staff?

This team has TALENT on the offensive side of the ball.

Tony has carried this team in the first TWO REAL games.

Well he won't be doing it at Chapell Hill.

It is time for our offensive coaches to earn their money.

You will not convince me that we do not have talent on the offensive side of the ball.

I have not pointed the finger at the coaches for having Tony in the game at the end. We needed him there to win and you cannot forsee this type of injury.

HOWEVER, WHY IN THE H*LL did we have to ask a running back to carry the ball 36 times?

Can someone explain that to me?

Now it could have happenned on his 1st carry. BUT IT DID NOT. IT HAPPENNED ON HIS 36TH CARRY.

If our offense was not so deficient then we would not have asked ANY running back to carry the ball SO MANY times.

the GT record is 39 rushes, which would have been broken had Tony not gotten hurt.

WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT OUR OFFENSE? That we are breaking rushing attempt records.

WE USE TO BE A PASSING TEAM.

These are some serious questions. I am surprised more people are not asking them.

The reason more people are not voicing it is because you said it all and in a nutshell!

If Tony had "tweaked" that knee earlier, did trainer or dr. put at brace on for him to go back in? I play a little tennis, and when I feel a "tweak", I even put a brace on to continue just for protection.

I heard today that the first comments at lunch were a response to boos by CG per Wilson. If our coaches waste time on that, then no wonder Offense is in trouble. They should be brainstorming about plays and working with qb!

I agree with every statement you made especially about using our complete arsenal and not just one. My gosh, no recruits except rb's will sign cause this staff does not seem to spread the ball!

Law-bee, okay, I will be the one to get shot at, so here goes. These are my thoughts and opinions and nothing more. They may be right, they may be wrong.

I hate to go back to the Friegden days, but it seems to be part of the overall malady. It is well known, I fervently believe Friegden gave us the winning edge. It is beyond a doubt, he has a great offensive mind and has also developed great quarterbacks.

I was a voice in the wilderness, last year, warning of a drop-off in wins due to a poor defense and and a probable less efficient offense. It happened as I had envisioned.

O'Brien had been hailed by many as being a bright young man who could replace Friegden ably. I do not doubt his academics, however, he had never had to prove himself on his own. He had a pretty good year, but not the edge that Friegden afforded us in the past.

A small amount of doubt creeped in after the Peach Bowl. Last year, it was uncertain if the offense was truly O'Brien's or partially O'Leary's. We are in a new year where O'Brien is having to stand on his own two feet.

Regardless of one's opinions, it is a fact Godsey was an unusual talent in his ability to see the defense and change plays adeptly. O'Brien had the advantage last year of having back a veteran quarterback, who was also a coach on the field.

As stated previously, Friegden was very good at developing quarterbacks. O'Brien played defense in college, and his only fame is being the assistant to a great offensive mind. He has never had to develop a quarterback. He has never stood alone as the offensive coordinator without a quarteback that was not developed by someone else.

Now he is standing alone on his own merits as an offensive coordinator and a develope of quarterbacks. Since Friegden has left, our offensive output has been less than dazzling. If you take away Godsey from last year's equation, how effective would we have been?

Another concern that is obvious, is the passing game as effective as it should be at this stage of the season? Is there some problem in the coaching of the passing game?

Of course, he has to learn, but how steep will the learning curve be?

The question in a lot of minds, can O'Brien handle the job? Will the offense get better as Suggs gets more experience? Why are we so one-dimensional on running the ball? Why can't we have more backs in the backfield at the same time running the ball? Is it not obvious to the opponents defense as to who will run the ball on each attempt? Is using the same ball carrier on every play a formula for failure?

Everything may be hunky-dory, we will suddenly break loose and become an offensive whirlwind, and ease everyone's minds. However, at this particular time, it is natural for a lot of fans to be worried and searching for answers.

Isn't football great?

Correct. The staff is out of focus.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">The staff, so far, appears to be a serious downgrade from the Seattle Bowl staff. In particular, o-line coaching and receiver coaching.
Also, the special teams are very sporadic (klimpsum game was particularly pathetic on special teams).
And on defense we seem to be able to stunt and blitz to get the job done at times, but that leaves us vulnerable to QB draws and screens that burned us on Saturday. We do not seem to be able to play straight up defense nearly as effectively as we would like.

beeware (aka Mole), your powers of observation (or lack there of) should tell you what everyone else has seen. The D played a hell of game against a powerful offensive team, our special teams played much better than last week but the biggest improvement was the lack of penalties. We played a great game defensively and still need some work offensively. But again, you have to be negative about the team instead of throwing a few props. By the way, coaching has a significant influence on a football team that improves in several areas in one week. You are such a MOLE!

What I am wondering is why are we not using more plays when we throw. If A.J. cannot hit our guys on timing routes, then we have to do something to allow him to hit out guys short or something. Also, to beat UNC in our current situation, we may need a trick play. I saw some plays in N.C. State's 1st game vs. New Mexico. Some tricks plays may be a must top beat UNC, especially later on.(NCST, FSU, UGA)

Beeware you must have gone to Seatle and hung out in the grunge city and smoke some herbs because you are definately in while I will call going forward "The Beeware Seatle Bowl Induced Fog"

Lets start with the defense. We have not stopped anyone consitently in our base defense since 1990 and will not do it this year with our defensive line..simply not enough strength and bulk in the middle of the line

Lets move on to offense. The line blocking is as good or better than last year in total and the run blocking is significantly better. The major problem with the offense is Suggs is way to slow making decisions. The wide receivers are fine and running good routes, Suggs does not grasp Bill O'Brien's offense and its up to Bill to get him to do so or dumb it down for him.

Law Bee you touched on the very thing that has me
very concerned about our team. Ahso mentioned that
BOB looked successful last year because he inherited a QB that was developed by the Fridge. And by developed I mean he taught him to understand his own system and to recognize what our opponents were trying to do and to check off
to plays that would benefit Tech. BOB doesn't seem to have a clue as have been so painfully demonstrated by our QB not being able to check off. To add to the problem our OL coach hasn't exactly glistened in developing our talented kids
on the OL. This lack of blocking has further frustrated AJ and has contributed to his loss of confidence. We have too much talent to look so disjointed, especially the offense. This has to go
back to the coaches and ultimately to CG HIMSELF.
This team for the most part has been an undisciplined group and I cringed after one of our TD'S the team was rolling on the ground in the EZ celebrating Sat. Most officials would have thrown a flag, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be a concern to Chan.I guess the reason this is grating on me so much is that I have questions about CG's recruiting ability. Can he recruit talent equal towhat he is losing this year. We lose a lot of seniors and if our staff can't recruit comparable talent to replace them
the future doesn't look too rosy.

Big Buck,

AJ was holding the ball way too long. You can't expect the OL to hold them out more that 5 seconds. Most plays the pass is designed to be thrown in no more that 4 or 5. Give the staff a chance to recruit. I am not ready to give up on them from a recruiting standpoint without giving them a chance. Dave Wilson, the defacto recruiting coordinator, is absolutely one of the best in the business. It is true, we lose a lot of seniors but thankfully they are not all starters

recruiting is a WHOLE other issue.

THE MOST IMPORTANT thing now is the X'S AND O'S.

If we dont learn to coach what we have it will not matter who they get in here.

I want some innovation. I want to see some quick drop back passing. I want to see my qb looking defenders off.

I put this squarely in the lap of O'brien. I see that ass. head coach on his title and I just have to wonder.

We will see come saturday b/c Tony will not be there to bail this coaching staff out.

ahsoisee:

You were one of the few but not the only one. I've been saying all along that this year would tell us a lot about O'Brien. Its the first year without a Ralph-instructed QB. I think the lack of quality teaching is begining to show. IMO O'Brien has a grasp of X's and O's and running the offense (except for player rotation). However I am not sold on his QB coaching abilities, which is where Ralph excells. Who else takes Shaun Hill, George Godsey and Joe Hamilton (who nobody wanted as a QB except us) and makes them All-ACC? Who else take Stan Humphries and goes to the super bowl? We need a QB coach because AJ has the tools.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Slight correction, Hamilton was heavily recruited. It came down to us and Nebraska--they wanted him to run the option. Luckily, he choose GT.

But your other points are well taken. Suggs and Bilbo have the ability, it is up to the staff to develop it.

Hamilton was heavily recruited, but TECH and Nebraska were the only two teams willing to recruit him as a QB. He originally committed to Nebraska and then changed his mind after talking to his mother.

I have a game to play. We must all take a shot of Pepto to keep from getting sick everytime Beeware keeps digging up his same old whine about the "Seattle Bowl" staff.

I too had some SERIOUS doubts about the Offense prior to the season.I cringed (and commented) when some guy on the Board called Suggs a GREAT QB before he even played ONE game at Tech.PLEEEEZE!So here we are, with a faltering QB and our savior RB now gone, wondering what we do on offense.Well here is my formula.
1.Go to quick passing game.Use the talent of the receivers to catch and run. This also uses the height/size of Suggs: while a slow-developing or poorly-blocked pass play does the opposite emphasizing his LACK of elusiveness and playmaking ability.Dump in a few draws and quick hitting running plays and we might get some first downs.
2.Play Bilbo!!!! I was wrong. Before the season I said he was not ready. He may not be but he is a threat and Lord,we need threats at this point.Get him on the field with specific plays especially near the goal-line so he can offer a run/pass option. His NOT playing has been the single BIGGEST coaching error(and boy do we have choices)this year.
3.Ride the Defense and kicking game as far as possible. They ain't dominating but they are definately a major concern for opposition.
4.At this point , the KEY is making third down conversions and scoring in the red zone. The Defense WILL give them chances, the Off has GOT to convert.
IF BOB/Chan doesn't change focus,we are headed for a MAX,that's a MAX of 3 more wins imho and of course everyone has one.
