New commit...

I tend to agree with BOR

1.there is nothing out there right now that shows that CG has done anything beyond an average job in recruiting. Now if he goes 7-3 this yr(against the real teams)he will kill that.
2.This new recruit IS a possession type receiver.Avg 15 yds per catch in hi school is a TE number not big time WR number. Not that he can't be ok but that is the truth.Drawing a comparison,I doubt if he ever will have a 60 and 80 yd catch in college.
BOR has a more conservative not negative view on the situation. He could call you overly optimistic.

One player I think everybody is forgetting about is Michael Johnson. I don't know about you, but I was sold on the staff's evaluating abilities when Johnson came out of nowhere and became the 7th ranked TE in the nation after he committed to us. Another example is Vance Walker. I know I would have been skeptical about a kid who's only other offer was Eastern Caroline to play as a true freshman. Along with the other cases presented in hiver's post, it certainly gives you a case for the staff being moderately successful in offering two stars and lower three stars when we've had to.

Re: I tend to agree with BOR

Have you seen the film of Melton? I am guessing not based on your comments.

If you cannot see the difference in recruiting activity this year over past years then you are just being ignorant. It may or not show incredible results in year one but will make a huge difference over time. The amount of numbers we are recruiting, and offering...particularly the early offers...is FAR above the numbers the past few years...not even close.

Certainly you have to admit there is a noticeable strategic change with Collins running it over David Wilson.

Re: I tend to agree with BOR

1. Very few receivers catch 60-80 yard passes

2. The leading yardage receiver in the country last year averaged 17 yards per catch.

3. Our new offense is geared toward a possession passing game.

4. Anyone who doesn't see the obvious improvement in how we are recruiting and hasn't seen how many top rated recruites have visited obviously hasn't been paying very close attention and is just sitting back waiting to criticize.

Choice was not offered by Tech.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is not true. He had an offer with a time limit and did not take it. When he was ready to commit (supposedly) the offer was not still on the table.

BOR, you just always try to find more fault than find positives. It is quite sickening.

All I remember is when we took Grant, Choice was not an option anymore. Don't understand why you are sickened. Its a message board dude.

I definately agree with you. But these are the exceptions and not the norm. How about eveyr player who committed to us from relatively out of nowhere that wasn't upgraded at all. In the past 3 years, it seems towards the end we are playing catch up.

I agree with Hivertech that this year seems a lot more promising. There is definately more early activity which is not a bad thing. Its easy to see with the type of recruits who are talking about us. That said... it still doesn't amount to squat until February when we can judge our efforts accordingly. Until then, taking guys (regardless of how good they might be) that virtually come out of nowhere, remind me of past recruiting strategies and not the apparent new one. Hopefully Melton will turn out to be like the Vance Walker and Michael Johnson examples you listed. And btw, Vance Walker had a late offer from VT and I believe got some serious attention if not an offer late from SC so that was really a evaluation success story.

Also, I've seen his film on the sites, and he is definately a possession receiver.

and possession receivers are what you need in a spread option.

Harvey Middleton was an outstanding possession receiver.

except Melton appears a lot quicker than Middleton.

Panther

You don't comprehend too good.duh-
1.Hivertech saw another Nate Curry .Curry had those catches. This guy probably won't.
2.The best guy in the country had 17 yds/catch in HIGH school?I think not.I said high school! You tend not to do as well in college as in hi school for some reason.
3.Lets see if we are still in the spread 3 yrs from now.Maybe, maybe not.You still need to stretch the Def.A good point though.
4.I didn't say ANYTHING about the new coaches/recruiting.Would hope they they will be a step up from Wilson, who wouldn't be?

Re: Panther

Last I checked you play 4 WR's regularly and keep at least 6 on roster.

You do not want all of them to have the same skills. For instance, you do not run the ball with Calvin Johnson...he is not a reverse type of guy. He is a pure wideout.

Dez White was great at stretching the field...but God help him on quick hits over the middle on 3rd and 5 situations...his hands were not dependable.

You have to recruit diversity at that position.

You mean we need some white, hispanic or oriental receivers?

Seriously, does anyone remember Herman Lam?

Re: Panther

Actually I hope the kid isn't another Nate Curry. He had way too many drops imo after his freshman year. Don't know what happened there.

Possession receivers are valuable though, or every team wouldn't have them. Besides, a 4.5 possession receiver (if it's legit) is pretty damn fast. 4.5 speed can get deep on most teams.

For those of us that don't, please tell.

Herman Lam, if I got the name right

was an oriental-ancestry Tech football wide receiver in the late 60's early 70's. He made some really good catches against UGAg in the first Thanksgiving night nationally televised game in which we almost upset the dawgs, losing something like 28-24.

Gary Faulkner was putting the wood to the UGay receivers, knocking them around like bowling pins, but a very questionable pass interference call on GF late in the game saved UGag's winning drive. Andy Johnson was their QB I believe. All of that from memory. Hope that some of it is correct.

Wow. Did an internet search on Herman Lam and

came up with this. Almost gotta be the same guy. Impressive.

Lord have mercy! I should say so. Thanks for the football stuff too. I can understand that.

That is correct about Herman.

His family imigrated from Hong Kong when he was 7. Graduated The Academy of Richmond County in 1967, where he gained all-state recognition in football, basketball and track. Came to Tech on an academic scholarship after making 1580 on the SAT(780-verbal). (So he screwed up- English was his 2nd language!)Played football at Tech( his claim to fame besides being deepsnaps' teammate was driving ND's secondary crazy in '69.) His older sister and 3 younger brothers are also Tech grads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif

I nominate Herman Lam and John Davis

as the first inductees into the Stingtalk hall of fame. We have to get Dr Lam to start posting on here tho.

Re: I nominate Herman Lam and John Davis
