From the second Williams entered the portal, USC became one of the frontrunners to land him. Former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley, who gave the freshman quarterback a starting job in Norman, is now the leader of the Trojans’ program in Southern California.

Newly-hired LSU head coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers are also reportedly involved in a “bidding war” for the future Heisman favorite.

I realize “bidding wars” have always existed underground, but in my opinion, this is a harbinger for teams like GT to become even less significant. I hope not.

Buying a championship 101.

UGA spent $2 million more on recruiting than second on the list (Alabama) to "buy" their championship. $9 million per year finally did it, Bama spends $7 million per year.

However, that kind of money is nothing compared to what is about to happen. $9 million a season is going to seem like a bargain.
 
That’s only the above board spending. Way more than that behind the scenes. That’s why college football is doomed. Money has ruined it. Can’t keep up with the handful of programs that have a bottomless pit of cash.

We have people whining about press conference demeanor and music at practice, ignoring 90% of the iceberg underwater. It has been and always will be about players. You can talk about coaching once you hit a certain blue-chip ratio.
 
This has been happening forever. Why do you guys think it’s all doom? This is nothing new. The only difference is now we know about it. And for every guy who is “bought” and succeeds, you’ll have 3 that are ”bought” and it doesn’t pay off. And why would any of this make GT worse? The bidding war for Williams between a handful of teams has zero impact on GT no different than the bidding war for Cam or Bo hurt GT. How did Ohio State fare buying Ewers?

As for me, I have no problem if UGA wants to spend big bucks on Williams. He’s good but not outstanding. And the minute he commits they’ll lose the two 5 stars. The market will work itself out. As someone else pointed out, UGA has turned into a top tier program because they spend money on recruiting. GT could do it if they wanted but we choose to spend our money elsewhere.

Depressing though it is, this is the truth. The sport will still be around, but we are never going back to anything resembling the college football we fell in love with. None of our reasons for wanting to go back will ever matter to the people making the decisions and the "conversation" about it which plays out on sports networks and radio shows means a grand total of dick. There is no discussion, they are going to squeeze every last cent from the sport they can, and they will mangle it beyond recognition if doing so might get them another buck.

Not really related but those of you who shrug it off because this is just the natural order of things in our wealth worshiping world, you are the biggest ööööing cucks on the planet.

Yes they could. We would have to reconfigure the entire school and endowment to support athletics but GT has chosen to keep the big money separate from athletics. That’s a decision made by GT. We could absolutely do it but we chose not to. UGA, Clemson, Bama, OU all have schools that work with athletics. We don’t, but we could. And you better believe the BOR would fight us every step if GT ever decided to reorganize because they love a divided GT.

None of that endowment was intended for athletics. You can't simply pencil whip it over to athletics at a school like GT without repercussions. If we were LSU, Tennessee, or UGAg, it would be fine.

That’s my point. We would have to make structural changes just like the teams in the top 10 have done. We pretend we are poor when we aren’t. We have done this to ourselves. We absolutely have the money if we had a leader who could unite the school. Instead we choose to be a hodgepodge of programs both academically and athletically fighting amongst ourselves with an administration full of career people earning a paycheck until they move to their next paycheck.

Structural changes? Like what? Oh, I'm sorry high tech company. We took your funds and put it towards football. What? You're pulling future funds? Why?

Tech does not have enough alums who care about football or any sports enough for this type of thinking to gain any traction. Short of the next Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos having a GT degree, we are pretty much screwed going forward.
