Tax soft drinks to fight obesity, U.S. experts say

New York City health commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley, nutritionist Dr. Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health, Kelly Brownell, an obesity expert at Yale University in Connecticut and others said the current taxes do not go far enough.

"We propose an excise tax of one percent per ounce for any beverages that have any added caloric sweetener," they wrote in their proposal, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Much as taxes on tobacco products are routine at both state and federal levels because they generate revenue and they confer a public health benefit with respect to smoking rates, we believe that taxes on beverages that help drive the obesity epidemic should and will become routine."

They said studies have shown taxes could cut consumption just enough -- by about 1 gram of sugar per ounce.

"A tax of one cent per ounce of beverage would increase the cost of a 20-ounce soft drink by 15 to 20 percent." They estimate that would lead to a 10 percent drop in consumption, or enough to affect weight.

Cutting salt intake would slash health costs: Study

Cutting the average Canadian's salt intake in half would dramatically reduce the toll – human and economic – that hypertension or high blood pressure exacts in this country, a new study suggests.
Such a move would result in one million fewer people developing hypertension and a substantial increase in the number of people with hypertension who keep their blood pressure in check, according to the modelling study, published Tuesday in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.

So tax both salt and sugar drinks -- healthcare paid for! :)

Damn. posted in wrong forum. Mods, can you move this for me? I apologize to all for posting in wrong forum.

Realized it right after posting, unforgiven. Sorry about that

Yes, but we all know that inefficiency will take control and taxes will go up. It's a viscous cycle. Look at Amtrak for instance, who would ride that for high prices they charge when you could get there sooner on an airline for a few bucks more?

And if you want to get a package shipped without having to wait in long lines and not have the worker act like you are inconveniencing them, you will go with UPS, FedEx or DHL over USPS. Even Obama talked about how bad USPS is:
