Accidents happen & he should've heeded to people's warning when they told him not to ride his motorcylce w/o a helment... He simply said that he liked riding w/o one & that it wasn't against the law....He ignored their warnings & now unfortunately he will learn the hard way. I am not wishing him ill will (in fact hope he learns from this & will recover fully & maybe BUY a HELMENT). If I was his agent/coach/team mate I'd put a pool together and buy him a road suit & a matching helment.... Link:

Just b/c it's not against the law doesn't make it a wise decision or mean that it's safe....For instance: It's not against the law to spin around in a circle till you are too dizy to stand up with a pointed stick in your hand. BUT that doesn't mean that it's a SMART DECISION.

(Especially if you are a franchise player & key to the team) Will be interesting to see how he recovers.

Get well soon BIG BEN (even if you have to wear your football helment put something on that noggin')

I think so. I would think it was Ben's love of motorcycles that eliminated him as a possible recruit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Roethlisberger is just plain lucky that he wasn't seriously injured. Didn't Ron Gant break a leg on a motorcycle in the mid-90's which basically ended his career with the Atlanta Braves?

That, and the low and away breaking ball.

I have never been on anything more than a Honda Mini-Bike, but nothing looks cooler than a chromed Harley. Also, nothing looks more sickening than a crunched motorcycle of any variety.
Somebody got it right when he/she called them widowmakers.
Even though a serious wreck, I think Ben is lucky if this was all the damage done.

It seems like every year there is another professional sports figure that get seriously injured riding a motorcycle. If my arm was worth the millions that Ben's is there is no way I'd risk it. I'd drive a tank and go 10 mph under the speed limit.

Yeah, the Braves actually cut him from the roster saying he broke his contract which specifically excluded him from riding motorcycles. Gant claimed it didn't apply because he was actually riding a dirt bike on a track. ??

But Gant ended up at Cincinatti, I think, and helped them to beat the Braves in more than one game.

I am curious to see what LawBee has to say about this. I heard on the radio that the team's mgmnt sent him a letter stating that they wanted him to stay off the motorcycle. I have no knowledge of what whoever can/will do here but it will be informative to see who makes what next move as far as his career is involved. His injuries may be to the point that he may not want to return anyway, however I hope it's not that bad.

Re: NFL: Roethlisberger wrecks Bike:breaks nose/ja

According to what I've read there was nothing specific in Ben's contract prohibiting him from riding a motorcycle. There is, however, the standard verbiage that prohibits players from engaging in off-field activities that pose "a significant risk of personal injury."

I think it isn't too much of a stretch of the imagination to claim that riding what is claimed to be the fastest production motorcycle made with NO helmet on poses a "significant risk of personal injury."

However, it thankfully appears he will recover fully and the letter, which I'm sure was mainly a precautionary measure, will be moot.

Now before anybody gets crazy on me I believe that Ben has every right to ride a motorcycle. I personally don't ride one and no matter how much protective gear I could wear I wouldn't ride one. I just feel there's too much at risk from the millions of daredevil car and truck drivers out there who can kill a motorcycle rider by the tiniest of touches with a bumper. Certainly there is risk in getting in my car and such I'm just not going to take the risks I see on a motorcycle. But again, I wouldn't try to inhibit those who do want to get out there and enjoy riding (and if I felt safe I'd enjoy it plenty).

Re: NFL: Roethlisberger wrecks Bike:breaks nose/ja

I have no idea what Ben's contract looks like, or anyone else's for that matter, but when players (not saying Ben) ask for and receive any kind of guaranteed money they had better respect what the contract reads or pay the consequences.
That said, I know everyone is happy that the wreck was not more life or career threatining.
By the way, what happened with K. Winslow's money after his bike wreck?

Re: NFL: Roethlisberger wrecks Bike:breaks nose/ja

I used to ride WAY back in the day. Full time. Only transport. In the ATL. Interstates, weather, hazards, close calls, the whole nine yards. Luckily I never bit the pavement. Riding w/o helmet is for dopes. My bro would be dead today if it hadn't of been for his helmet catching the impact of having a wagon turn in front of him on Piedmont years ago. Still wound up a human scab with lifelong bursitis but the helmet kept his egg from getting splattered.

On the one hand this dude is lucky to be alive. On the other he's an idiot for even tempting fate.

It's not so much you as it is the other guy. BEE careful!!!

After his bike wreck a log of the money never became Kellen's. His contract was worded specifically to protect the team in case he was injured riding a motorcycle so they didn't have to pay him a bunch of it and I think he had to pay back a pro-rated amount of his signing bonus.

One other note on Big Ben is that he was supposed to be filming a Campbell's Chunky Soup commercial soon. With the facial damage I suppose that will be put on hold for a little while at least.

You can BET ALL multi-million $$$ K's in the future will have these "idiot" clauses.

If you get injured breaking the law (i.e. not wearing legally required safety gear like a helmet) you will lose X amount of your K.

Because of the EXTREME amount of $$$ paid these guys it is perfectly reasonable for a team to protect themselves. They should make these players wear seatbelts and quit smoking as well with the money they make. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

If Ricky Williams could stay off the "dubage" he would probably be the best back in the NFL.
