I know this applies to all sports, but football will be the most highlighted, probably.

NIL is now a thing in GHSA. Link

There is very little reason for football to be connected to schools anymore at any level. Coaches being hired as “teachers.” Kids transferring with fake addresses. Tampering. Players being funneled into fake classes / majors that prepare them for nothing after school. Team success essentially tied to enrollment now. It’s all a farce.

Just structure it like soccer now with regional clubs that can buy/sell/trade players to support their costs.

If people are dumb enough to pay HS athletes, that’s on them. Again, this has been happening under the table for 50 years. It’s just legal now to do so.

Good on the kids for capitalizing on the stupidity of adults.

I figure the local Ford dealer will be throwing a few bucks to Johnny Football Star and putting him in an ad in the newspaper.

I honestly don't know what people expect when they allow society to redefine immoral as virtuous. The foundation of that society will crumble and the whole thing will collapse.
Some people would define allowing a high school kid to receive pay from any adult stupid enough to pay him for his efforts as virtuous. The guy that owned the local grocery store paid me money to bag groceries when I was in high school. I thought that was virtuous. I didn’t work half as hard as my buddies that played football. It’s American capitalism at its finest.

was compensation to high school athletes previously forbidden before this?
Yes, I’m pretty sure. One of the big downsides is it would affect your amateur status and ability to get a college scholarship.

I wouldn’t think NIL changed that but maybe it has.

I know the NCAA is toothless and this wouldn't happen (and honestly wouldn't want it to for the kids' sakes), but there's a small part of me that would find it hilarious if GHSA essentially legislated a whole class of standout Georgia athletes are unable to play college ball due to losing amateur status.

You're surely able to distinguish a job from NIL and are trolling, right?

We have to stop and think, what are we doing using NIL for HS players ?? This is insanity allowing players to receive benefits for playing HS football! These kids will be switching schools , graduating with no education, but going to college to play football ,where again they get a pass and come out probably not able to write or read.

I am partly trolling, but I do find it amusing when people go on these boards and express something they do not agree with as immoral. The “foundation of society” as you put it does not crumble because something was enacted that you do not like. As for the high schooler receiving a little money, I do say it is capitalism. Which is American as apple pie.

You may be naive but high school kids are already switching schools to play football. I’m not saying it’s right or that I like it but it happens at at high schools all over Georgia.

I can’t understand why folks are getting worked up on things that have been happening for decades already! Seriously, just because it’s new to some of you who haven’t been paying attention, doesn’t mean the end of the world is here. High school players have been getting inducements forever to switch schools and use relatives addresses. And kids have been graduating high school and playing college football for decades with no education. Malcolm Mitchell was praised on national TV for playing for UGA with a 3rd grade reading level long before we ever heard of the term “NIL”. I’m down in South Georgia and I could give you lists of high school kids who were induced to change addresses to go to Lee County, Colquitt County, Lowndes County, etc. And that’s just the public schools. In the private schools you have kids who get GOAL money to play in the fall and then transfer back to the public school for hoops.

None of this is new. It’s just new to you. So relax and continue to enjoy the game like you have been.

Why? I thought HS players had to play in district unless they went to a private or city school. What is the NIL for? I just don't get it.
