Anyone else surprised by this [from this ajc article earlier this week]:
Coaches in the press box don't have access to replays.
Maybe Knobler is wrong. Maybe the real world isn't like those HDTV/plasma screen commercials. But it sure seems like the program could afford to assign this duty to someone and give them a headset...

Here's the full story:
Why didn't Tech challenge the call when Djay Jones appeared to strip the ball from Miami's Shawnbrey McNeal on the Hurricanes' second touchdown drive but officials ruled the play dead? Coaches in the press box don't have access to replays, and there was no replay on the Orange Bowl scoreboard. Also, Tech coach Chan Gailey said, the officials didn't look uncertain about the play and Tech's players didn't react as if a call had clearly been blown.

Unlike the NFL, NCAA rules prohibit coaches from using TV replay or monitor equipment:

ARTICLE 9. a. Television replay or monitor equipment is prohibited at the sidelines, press box or other locations within the playing enclosure for coaching purposes during the game. Motion pictures, any type of film, facsimile machines, videotapes, photographs, writing-transmission machines and computers may not be used by coaches or for coaching purposes anytime during the game or between periods.

Interesting. So now I'm curious about this part in the article "...and there was no replay on the Orange Bowl scoreboard."

How could it ever be "legal" to show replays on a jumbotron? Especially if the host were showing a play with a questionable call? Surely they must try to avoid that. But what's questionable, after all, is subjective...

There could definitely be some homecookin' when it comes to what is or is not shown on the jumbotron then, huh.

So then can the players ask the coaches to appeal the ruling? Or is there time to do that with the game going at the speed it is now?

So then can the players ask the coaches to appeal the ruling?

They can, and one would hope they usually do. I seem to recall Mr. Jones vigorously protesting to the zebras... Looks like that's one of the only possible ways coaches can make the decision. Especially without Home Jumbotron Advantage!

Also, Tech coach Chan Gailey said, the officials didn't look uncertain about the play and Tech's players didn't react as if a call had clearly been blown.

I will say that unless you carefully watch the video you do not see that as a fumble. Also we have been screwed by so many replays this year I find it unlikely we would have gotten that call.

I think that the home team can decide what to show on the jumbotron, but they can only show each play once, or something like that.
