Anybody else remember this boob that was actually hired "away" from the fishwrap to be in charge of our public relations? Jeezus, those were some funny days. Although at the time you were extremely pissed off. For instance.

Arey who is/was a UGAg man determined right away that in order for GT to be successful we needed to change our beloved nickname from "Yellow Jackets" to "Rambling Wreck."
Nobody asked anybody if this was sane or not and there was actually a mild pr campaign launched until it was squashed. I believe he was also in on endorsing that the lyrics to "Ramblin' 'Reck" be changed to something more pc and girl scout cookie oriented. Thanks, dawgs! Who hired this guy in the first place?

The debate over who may be the best candidate to represent TECH as AD brought this episode to mind.

And yes, kids, this really happenned. Can you imagine?

Are you serious? Yes, I remember Norman Arey. I actually had no idea that this had happened ...what a boob. When was this?

Funny, but when I grew up we were The Ramblin Wreck or at least I thought we were. I remember in school in the 70's that Tech fans were making fun of Auburn (God rest our great old rivalry) and their multiple mascots, War Eagles and Tigers. I clearly remember saying "huh?, we're The Ramblin Wreck and now the Yellow Jackets and have been the Engineers and Golden Tornado." When I bump into college fans now in Maryland, the older folks say "So you're a Ramblin Wreck", not Yellow Jackets. Personally, Yellow Jackets suggest that our color is Yellow and hence why our scheme got all messed up in the 80's. I wish we were The Ramblin Wreck and just used Buzz and Yellow Jackets as gimmicks for the kids, instead of the other way around.

Now I'm not defending Arey of course.

we were also the blacksmiths for a while, or something like that, in the wonder years of college football.

Talk of the Ramblin Wreck reminds me of the first GT t-shirt I remember getting (now as a baby and toddler I had plenty of GT gear, but this is the first that I remember getting as a present).

My dad got it for me for Christmas, I was seven years old. It was a caricature of a Yellow Jacket mascot (Buzz wasn't around in '72) driving a version of the Ramblin Wreck. The inscription underneath read 'Ramblin Wreck'.

Now remember, I was seven years old. I didn't understand what that meant as I actually thought it was portraying GT in the negative. My dad explained it to me so that I understood what 'Ramblin Wreck' was all about. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

Re: The Golden Tornado **

I remember when he disappeared from the ajc, but I really am lost on the fact he went to PR at GT. Why would GT want him?

I remember Norm Arey. I also remember Weekend at Bernies. Which was which I cannot say.
