Tech missed out on a rare chance to change momentum in the third quarter. Tech forced BC into a three-and-punt situation to start the second half, and after five straight three-and-punts of their own, managed a first down. On third-and-9 from the Tech 33, Bennett completed a pass to wide receiver Greg Smith, who appeared to wriggle loose on the left sideline for a 12-yard gain.
The play was reviewed, however, and the spot was moved back to the 41. Tech punted. The official play-by-play read: "PLAY REVIEWED: Play stands as called, although reviews show he never stepped out of bounds."

"Play stands as called, although reviews show he never stepped out of bounds." What the HELL? At this point, I'm not even really angry; I'm just trying to understand what could possibly be going on here.

You have to admire the accuracy of the play-by-play. I'm guessing the home team statistician writes that.

Non-reviewable play. The ref blew it dead and said Greg stepped out of bounds. You can't overturn that no matter what the replay shows.

Officiating started one sided to BC, but we had quite a few penalties that weren't called as well. Wish I could blame the refs for our loss, but they did change momentum on some plays.

I think the same thing happened in the UGA-SC game. the officials don't really say that they can't review it, they just say "the ruling on the field stands". Confusing.

Probably the spot

The spot didn't matter if the play was blown dead because it was no where near a first down. I believe whether he was OOB or not was the reason for the review and the booth simply didn't want to overrule.

Plus a couple of really bad pass interference calls.
Question on the pass interference calls. The first (on Guyton) looked to be a bad call - I haven't gotten to that point in the game to review it on TV. The second call appeared (on the jumbotron replays) as if our guy (Clark, I think) was face guarding - is that illegal in college or only in the pros?

Probably the spot

Speaking of that....

Did anyone see the goal line series Tech had where the refs pushed us back a yard-ish? The stadium got quite rowdy over that one. The first ref spotted us a foot or more back, then we lost another bit when they swapped balls, totalling to a full yard.

It was reviewed and fixed....but college refs should be able to spot the ball if nothing else.....

C-Buzz, I watched the tape and the call on Guyton was a very bad call --FWIW, the guys calling the game for ESPN agreed. I listen to Wes & Van Note while at BDS and they both thought Guyton made a good play.

More on Wes and Note --If I wasn't already fired up about some of the calls in the third quarter by what I saw with my own two eyes, then Wes in particular would have gotten me there. He was really frustrated with the officiating --as was Van Note, particularly with a couple of holding/non-holding calls. You would have thought Noter bled old gold & white instead of Kentucky blue.

Guyton - horrible call.

Clark - good call, he held the receiver down pretty clearly.

So then why did they review it?

Technically they can probably review anything they want to, but what matters is whether or not the play is overturn-able.

The same exact thing happened 2 years ago when Chris Reis intercepted a pass and was running down the Tech sideline when the ref blew the whistle signaling he stepped out of bounds. They didn't review it because that call cannot be changed by replay.
