Hats off to the GT defense … outstanding game. If we keep creating turnovers we have a good chance to win some games. If we were in some kind of prevent victory defense those last few minutes we need to dump that.
Now to the offense … hats off to Stewart in the FG department. On the flip side, we’ve got to convert more of those drives into TD’s.
Pass protection is awful, I saw so many whiffed blocks and missed assignments when Pitt did twisted stunts that Sims was running for his life most of the time. You’ve got to be mobile to play behind our line.
My question is can our O produce enough points if not aided by 4 turnovers? Face it … Pitt played poorly but you have to credit our D with a lot of that. Bottom line … if the offensive line can improve, which late in the game last night they had Pitt’s DL on skates in the run game, and our D continues to be opportunistic, I think we can win some games scoring 24 - 28 points.
One other note … we need to protect the punter a little better. He was in such a rush last night to get the kick away that most of them were low line drives very returnable.
Duke will be a good test next week. They are pretty balanced offensively but I noticed they have given up some yards on D, especially against Kansas. We will find out if last night was an aberration like last years UNC game or are we climbing out of the nightmare known as the G**** C****** years.

Defense was very good, they were pretty much exhausted the last 10 minutes.

The offense seriously under performed.

Special teams are good again. Thanks to Key assigning a coach.

Very luck Pitt dropped all those ints Sims tried to throw.

Key went full Collins not kicking the FG late. Thankfully he regained his senses.

I will just enjoy the ride as long as it last.

See y'all Saturday, Go Jackets!

Good defenses are able to not be exhausted in a game with a reasonable TOP balance. They sure as heck have potential. Every team is going to try to take Thomas out of the game. They are likely to scheme around him.

Correct everywhere else.

Special teams doesn't count as offense. Offense was cheeks and I think our red zone scoring percentage dropped even lower than it already was

I’ll take our red zone performance vs Pitt over who we were in all previous games.

I am rooting for our RG because he is a walk-on and I like the story about him winning the job but he did get ate up a couple of times I was looking at him, unless they swapped out. If he is learning he has a chance to be really good for us. He really wants to be with us so he will be with us another 3 years.

His foot work is terrible, that can be fixed.

I’m not upset about Key going for it. We should have scored and that would have sealed the game. I didn’t like the play call, though (should have bootlegged Sims to a sideline on a designed run with a pass option).

Sims and the almost INTs (there were 4 dropped) are an issue. It’s as if he has tunnel vision on the receiver and can’t see the defenders. He’s also inaccurate long. I think the key to winning with Sims are designed short passes + QB runs. Every once in a while go deep if the safeties cheat in.

Also, it’s like we try to go deep to start every game and he throws an INT or a near INT on the first drive. Ease him into the game.

Me too. Quick was playing RG the entire second half.

I didn’t think all those FG’s were that close. Thanks for sharing. The offense still only converted 2/7 of the red zone possessions into scores, though.

We did a short pass to the sideline to start this game and it was a dropped pick six.

Agreed. I'm fine they went for it. I'm just pissed that on 3rd down they tried a QB keeper up the middle. Sims has shown he's not willing to take a hit or fight for an extra yard. I said this in the game thread; he's basically the anti-Nesbitt in toughness. The coaches must know this by now.

I'm thinking this week will be a better indicator of the team progressing out of the dark years. Last week was really a short week, and yes, alot of things were cleaned up. Coaching change didn't happen until monday so there was a lot of uncertainty till then. then have to travel on Friday (i guess). really only 3 days of practice and changing things. Going to get a full week in....

Sims made that play earlier in the game. I would prefer an additional OL to push Sims from behind on that play.

We 100% were. We were up 12 with under 4 minutes to go and Pitt had the ball inside the 1 yard line. Then after we scored again, we were still in it because we were back up 12 again with under 2 minutes to go. I don't mind the prevent defense, but if we're going to run it, the point is to make them make short/intermediate throws in the middle of the field and keep clock running/use timeouts. We gave up too many chunk plays laying back.

I don't mind going for it, but the playcall was bad. Just run it. Don't go for the low percentage fade ball. There was under 4 minutes to go in the game and Pitt needed 2 TDs either way even if we didn't score. If we were like just inside the 10 or so probably would've kicked it, but I didn't mind there because if you don't make it, they get it on the 1 and have to go 99 yards, then get the ball and score another TD all under 4 minutes. We kick the FG they can still tie it with 2 TDs but will get the ball at the 25 to start. If we score a TD, they have to score 3x to win.

Pitt was sitting on those short routes all game and baiting Sims. He didn't notice it and kept trying to make those throws.
