O\'brien has resigned

Remember those of us that felt something was up about midway through the season, that something was amiss?

I can't believe he waited 'till signing all of those recruits and then walks.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

He did not want to bee here & I do not think he was a good teacher. Why people gave him such an elevated status just because he worked for Ralph is strange.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

He's taking a demotion. In other words he intended to get out of here as soon as possible. I'd sure like to know why, and how far back into the season he'd made his decision.

It's amazing. I smelled it out back in October. If some of us could see it sitting in the stands, one only wonders how long the players have known.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

Frankly if this story is true (confirmed?), I'm glad to see him go(my unease like many of us with BoB started at the peach bowl).

However, three questions now come to mind.

Why this late a date? If it was an arranged departure, perhaps we wanted to get Feb 5 behind us before he left-to my way of thinking this is used car sales at its finest(?).

Secondly, how soon will a replacement be announced? If it was pre-arranged and the replacement was lined up earlier, we won't see any interviewing, just an announcement after a few weeks to allow the dust in BoB's former office to settle.

How many players (read Qbs) will leave now? If some do it may speak volumes about dissention on the team and between members of the coaching staff this past season.

Ahsoisee, are you following this news breaking story?

Re: O\'brien has resigned

Well, I don't pretend to know the inner workings between CG and his coaches, but how could this move have been prearranged? Maybe he has wanted to leave for some time, but the only reason Ralph has an opening on his staff is he had to fire his LB coach over the recruiting fiasco.

Also don't know why we always have to go to "player dissension". Coaches leave programs all the time. For all we know the players will welcome a new OC.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

For me I'm not sad to see him go (if true). He was in my opinion not much of an OC and less of a teacher of QB's. So bye BoB hate for you to be out of work. Tech needs a fresh start and we need a proven OC.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">ncjacket,

I was referring to leaving Tech, not landing at Maryland as being pre-arranged. "You will be leaving us nlt than Feb 6, leave nicely and you can stay on the payroll till then. Feel free to take off as much time as you need to look for other employment, oh here's Ralph's cell #"..."

Oh I didn't say any of this had taken place, future events will make what actually transpired clearer. As far as "player dissension", my comment wasn't critical nor that it was occuring. But it's not unusual at all for players to leave when a coach leaves, but it will, IF it happens, provide more insight into the relationships between coaches and players this past season.

Frankly, CG supporters are likely hoping this was the case ( as has been expressed here numerous times). They would hate to think all the ineptitude last season resided with Chan.

How's Wilmington? Don't get back there as often as I would like.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

I can see there being some understanding that BOB wanted to leave, just seemed you were assuming that the MD thing was in place prior to this week. I never got the feeling that CG and BOB were really on the same page last year but what do I know?

As far as players leaving, it doesn't sound like he was the primary recruiter for any QBs this year and one would think his relationship with Bilbo or Suggs wasn't the greatest either based on our performances last year. If somebody leaves, the leave. I have said it before, but if there were some widespread dissatisfaction among the players I believe we would know. Teams usually can't keep that stuff from the rest of the student body in my experience.

I don't get to Wilmington often myself, I live in Greensboro. If you haven't been down to Wrightsville or the Wilmington area in a while you would still likely recognize most stuff. It's grown up some, but not like some areas of the country.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

Honestly, it would be a total shock if anybody on the team left b/c BOB is leaving. Just from conversations in class and friends who are friends with players, you can really tell that this team, especially last year's seniors really believe in Chan Gailey, and what he wants to accomplish at Tech. Gailey and BOB didn't have the best relationship, but BOB didn't have the best relationship with some players either esp. Suggs and Bilbo.

This is a great opportunity for Chan to bring in his own guy. My guess is that our offense will begin to get better, and all QBs have a clean slate. Someone on the Hive mentioned Ken Whisenhunt, and he'd be my favorite. However, Nix could very well get the promotion. Folks, it appears that Chan's starting to get the hang of this college coaching thing, and I'm happy b/c it's about time.

Good luck BOB...we appreciate all you did for us.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

Toe - you seem to know something - I assume you are saying Hatcher is already on the hook? Or is this conjecture/speculation/hoping

Talk about a guy that can throw it around, and also work with QBs.

Wondering about the UK connection (ala Coach Smith, Gailey's initial choice for DC), as well as the Spencer connection.

Man, would we have a young staff. At the time, I remember all the talk was that BO'B was one of the youngest (if not the youngest) OC in the country. Isn't Hatcher younger than BO'B?

Re: O\'brien has resigned

TIAR/B hatcher is on 29, there is another side angle, we need state of georgia connections to improve in state recruiting. IT WILL HAPPEN.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

The rumour was the CG was asked to keep BOB for continuity and recruiting purposes. but the lack of continuity between quarterback and receivers that had been in the program together with the same coach was glaring.

Re: O\'brien has resigned

Keeping my fingers crossed for Hatcher! He won his divisions equivalent of the Heisman while at VSU, QB coached Culpepper at UCF, and nearly took VSU to the NC this year.
