O\'Brien staying on sidellines

You guys in favor of this??? A blurb in one of the Macon Telegraph articles mentioned that CCG wanted him to go to the booth, but he wants to stay on the sidelines to coach the QB's. I think this is significant mainly because BOB is in his first year of coaching QB's BY HIMSELF. He was OC last year, but Godsey was well schooled in the system. This year he has to school the QB's on the system and direct them himself.

Your thoughts on how he'll do??

Lots of OCs call games from field, and lots of them call from booth. That goes for college and pro level.

IF Coach O'Brien wants to call it from the field then that's cool by me. I'm sure Gailey doesn't have a problem with that even though he's stated he wanted him to be in booth. That's easy to work out.

Re: O\'Brien staying on sidellines

We are very, very, lucky that Bill O'Brien stayed. Coach O'Brien was the first coach that the Fridge felt comfortable enough with to move to the sidelines and allow Coach O'Brien to be his eyes in the sky.
If Coach O'Brien wants to coach from the sidelines then that is where he should be. But he needs a good coach up in the pressbox....I got it...how about 'Buck' in the pressbox?!?! I like it.

Re: O\'Brien staying on sidellines

Curious where Nix will wind up - field or booth. He is officially the RB's coach, but he played QB at Auburn and has a good rep. for offense coming into Tech. He likely is someone Tech will groom to one day be an O-Coord. candidate whether at Tech replacing O'Brien if he leaves or wherever he might land. I can see him being in the booth giving info to Billy like Billy did for Fridge. However, it being his first year in the program they may not have established enough "history" together to have that kind of relationship yet. Remember Billy has been in our program for a while now. He built a rep with Fridge as a recruiting coordinator before he was given the job in the booth as Fridge's eyes in the sky. Fridge came down to work on the field during Joe's freshman year to tutor and mentor him face-to-face. He stayed there I think primarily to get TV face time to help his chances of getting a job elsewhere AND because simply it was working. Not intended as a slam at Fridge, btw. It helped that he had Billy around and that was working too.

i dont think it really matters, things need to be taken care of prior to game day, IMHO.

Beeware -

You have done my heart good today - thank you. In your last post, you put the words "good coach" and "buck" in the same sentence. I don't know if you meant it the way I am taking it, but I am going to jump to the conclusion that you did, and I am very appreciative. I, too, think he is a good coach, just like I think GOL is a good coach.

GO JACKETS!!

Re: O\'Brien staying on sidellines

I see both sides of this story. On one hand, the coaches need to be on the sidelines to talk to and help the players during the game. On the other, it's so much easier to see the field and schemes when you're up in the booth and have access to more info. Tough call. However, I believe that ultimately it's up to the head coach and the coordinators to sort out. It's simply a matter of preference. If Bill wants to be on the sidelines, that's where he should be. As long as there is good communication between him and the booth, we'll be in good shape.

Agree with Beeware here... we are very lucky that BOB stayed... it will help us tremendously.... I dont care where he is during the game, as long as he is in position to do the best job he can...

Re: O\'Brien staying on sidellines

I like Billy. I am doubtful we will be able to hang on to him for the long run because he will bee gone due to his intelligence, Fridge protege roots, etc. I would like to believe he would be an insurance candidate to take over for Gailey if/when he leaves Tech. However I think Billy will be gone before Chan leaves. And btw, I am not one of those worry warts about which coaches are assured to leave.

I think too many Techies are naive to believe the coachspeak Chan threw out there at his initial press conference when he said he was here to stay. What do you expect him to say when asked that question? "Well Mr. Press Guy, I expect to stay here 3 years and then bail." Hardly. I think Chan will stay 3-4 years, will win big at Tech, will get tired of recruiting and at the same time will get a Spurrier type of offer from an NFL team in the 3-5 million per year range and will be gone. All dependent though on Tech being successful. Is that bad? Not necessarily. We'd all probably do the same thing. Tech can't compete with 3-5 million per year. I don't mind losing coaches via that route. I *DO* mind losing coaches because we aren't paying them market value or are not providing the resources to allow them to compete at a high national level (facilities, etc.). However, if anything I see Tech doing everything it can right now to increase salaries, provide resources, improve facilities, etc.

Billy is a fine coach. We are definitely lucky to have him - even if only for 1 more year. As my friend, Techbert, used to say...I'd rather have strong assistants others want and are a risk to leave than ones nobody wants.

The truth is the D-Coord's at Miss State and FSU are rare - especially in today's environment of mobility in jobs (not just in sports).

Re: O\'Brien staying on sidellines

JT,
A slightly different prediction on what may happen. I think both O'Brien and Tenuta will probably be gone after this season... as will a very big and talented senior class. Then the dropoff will begin...not too bad next year, but moreso the year after, when more and more of the O'leary recruits are gone, and more and more we have to depend on Buck's recruiting . After 3-4 years, the mistake known as 'Buck' will be fully revealed and 'Buck' jumps at any chance to get back to the NFL at whatever level.
A sad, but fairly likely, scenario...if somewhat different than yours.

BOB will do fine. I agree he should stay on the sidelines. If for no other reason than to be able to look these kids in the eye and either give them constructive criticism or cheer them on for a job well done.
