I'm all for rolling the dice with primetime but I have been impressed with what Key has done taking over the öööö show mid season. He's made some mistakes and had a couple of wtf games but all things considered I think he has done a great job with what he has to work with.

My question is, if we can get him on the cheap and take the savings and add an extra million or so to the offensive coordinator budget, who could we get? Bama, Ohio state and the dwags are all paying around 1-1.25 million. We are currently paying 850,000. If we were to offer 1.5-2 million we should be able to get the best of the best.

If key can manage the program and recruit for a price that would allow us to go after top notch coordinators (similar to dabo), who would you go after?

Is CBK a loyalist, who will stick with the guys he respects and has experience with? Would he prefer to play it safe with his group of friends, or is he someone who will reach for coaches outside his circle who might have more creativity and energy? It’s not always possible to get top talent, even if you have the resources to recruit it. Would Key be the kind of head coach who would be able to draw the best coordinators to GT? I’m OK with CBK as the head coach, but I’d like to be convinced that he has the desire, insight, and salesmanship to shake things up with coordinators. Some of Tech’s recent failures seem to be linked to head coaches who put loyalty ahead of success.

I think this is a great question. The current OC and his coaches have shown some improvement as the season has progressed. The OL is playing better (a critical success factor) and the game plan for the UNC game was solid and the development of the #'s 3 and 4 QB's was notable. The Total O rank this season is only #110, but I think I might give them another year to show what they can do. Some things seem to be gelling, but then it could be the level of competition.
The D also seems to have improved over the course of the season but is still ranked only #87 of 131 teams in FBS. It's in the neighborhood of USCe, Oregon, Wake, and UCLA. Not terrible but certainly below average. Here are the offenses we have played ranked in order. Note that 2 of the 40-point+ games we've allowed came against top 15 offenses early in the season. Here's the list along with the outcome and the points we allowed to them (also points given up by the O/ST):
#4 OIe Miss - L - 42
#8 UNC - W - 17
#13 UCF - L - 27
#16 FSU - L - 41
#50 Dook - W - 20 (7)
#51 Clemson - L - 41
#65 Pitt - W - 21
#85 Miami - L - 35 (7)
#103 UVA - L - 16
#118 VPI - W - 27 (14)

Ha. Yeah, maybe not, too.

You have to ask why this happened and it may not be OC related. My concern is that much of the issue is OL related, and that will not change with a new OC. They just have to grow up. We were playing with a bunch of FR/SO before the injuries. Seriously, Lay (r-SR) is the only upperclassman on the OL this season.

OL coach>OC. But yeah a complete O overhaul would be good. And strong recruiters.
