Offensive/Defensive Special Teams?

Has anyone ever heard of this distinction before? Is our team punting considered offensive or defensive? Fake punts = offensive and normal = defensive?

Seems strange and I don’t understand the need for the distinction.

Well I'd imagine punt return, kick return, field goal and xp units are all offensive special teams, while punt, punt block, kickoffs, fg block teams are all defensive special teams. Some of those could be flipped depending on how you define them and want to use them, but I can see how a distinction is made.

Splitting up special teams is common. It was that way under CPJ. Calling them Offensive and Defensive special teams might be unusual, but we did that under CPJ too - the special teams performance was offensive and people got defensive when the offense was blamed for bad special teams.

If you're the team that can score on the play (without a turnover), then it is offensive. FG, PAT, and returns.

If you're the team tackling on the play then it is defensive. KOs and punts.
