Already been a busy offseason for the REIGNING STANLEY CUP CHAMPS Washington Capitals.

    - Trotz asks for a big raise and both sides agree to part ways. Heads to NYI for $5M per year. Reirden expected to be announced as HC any day now.

    - Dump Orpik’s salary along with Grubs to COL to free up cap space.

    - Resign Carlson, DSP, Kempny for $11.5M AAV on hometown discounts which is a cumulative steal. We’ve got the Top 4 D all locked up for the next 3 years now.

    - about $9M left to resign Wilson, Beagle, and find a #6D. Might even get Orpik back at league minimum after COL bought him out.

So we might end up with the entire lineup back (minus the backup goaltender) from the Cup champs. Crazy.

    - retained Smith-Pelly on a 1 year deal for $1M to stay in DC. Turned down multiple offers, some for longer terms.

    - Orpik may be back... He was bought out by Colorado. Intriguing way to dump salary, and maybe keep the guy after all. Would say it seems mildly unethical, except that the contract was fulfilled in the end.

Tavares to Toronto. Quite the group of forwards they’ve assembled - maybe best in the league on the whole. Defense still suspect though.

Lots of smoke around potential Karlsson -> Tampa trade tonight. That would be a pretty damn formidable lineup depending on who they'd have to send back the other way.

Man, you're on fire! As a long suffering but now elated Caps fan, I appreciate the work.

Caps off to a fast start at 2-0-1 through 3 at +9. Ovi being Ovi. Kuzy being Kuzy. Backsy being Backsy. Cup hangovers be damned.

Toronto forwards on fire and defense in shambles. About how people expected. Matthews with 7+3 through 4 games to pace the league.

Carolina looking like they’re gonna steal a playoff spot from an unsuspecting Metro team.

The Donald Trump of hockey returns and scores a goal while taking out the goalie.

The Caps are playing in the weakest division in the NHL and right now they're missing the playoffs.

But at least they aren't the Pens, which are a dumpster fire.

Anybody following what Ovi’s doing? 29 goals in 32 games - 74 goal pace for the season. Even if he regresses to his career average for the rest of the season he’ll hit 60. At 34 years old. Just unreal.

Caps and Pens looking back on track. Might as well just fast forward to the third week of April.

Avs top line is on fire. Ridiculous numbers.

I watched the Avs play a few games and they are a fun team to watch. Pure speed.

I'm amazed at how good both they and the Sabres have gotten in just one season. And just how bad Jersey got.

I have several good friends that are big Avs fans. Avs turned it around last year once they got rid of Duchene, so what they are doing this year doesn't surprise me as much. Now the Sabres...I did not see that coming.

I don't think anyone did. They've been such utter trash for so long that it's weird to think of them as good. It's like Kentucky winning the SEC East.

Sabres and Flames both playing great with former Hurricanes - Skinner is on fire and Coach Peters has Hanifan and Lindholm in Calgary. Watching us continue to be awful at last night’s 4-1 loss to the Red Wings, we all talked about how getting away from the Canes seems to guarantee better performance and coming here leads to a falloff in production.

Sabres are just so fast. With Boston getting healthy the 1st two rounds in the Atlantic are gonna be something to watch.
