Did anyone else see the block in the back on the second of the two big UGA punt returns? They had called us for one earlier and then UGA does the exact same thing and it goes uncalled. Then, there was the obvious late hit late in the game that goes uncalled. Granted, Ball probably would have found some way to give away the game anyway but it's very frustrating to see a call that doesn't go both ways hurt your team as well as an obvious call that would help your team not be called.

This officiating crew had there struggles ...particularly in the 1st quarter. But no, officiating did not have a play in the outcome of this game ...punt coverage and lack of discipline on the O line did.

Watching the punt return live my wife hollered out "Block in the back" on the return. A missed call that surely hurt.
Our D would not have let them march 65 yards.

It absolutely did play a huge part in the outcome of a field position game. It was the longest two punt returns we have given up all year...and the last one (with the obvious block in the back and another hold) set up their winning TD. If not for that no-call they would have started on their own 20 instead of on our 40. BIG DIFFERENCE.

The block in the back should have been called and certainly assisted in UGA setting up for the TD drive. However, (and I am going to have to play back the tape to figure out what happened) that punt was high and over near the sideline. Where the coverage was I just don't know. After Flowers caught the ball I thought for a moment he must have called for a fair catch, because there was no one on punt coverage ready to make a tackle, depsite there being enough yellow jerseys in the vicinity to make a play. Make the tackle, stop him in his tracks, and UGA cannot set up the return with the block in the back.

It was poor special teams play in the second half that ultimately flipped the field position that UGA gave GT at the opening of the half. GT never capitalized on that field position, and it ended up costing them the game.

The MUCH, MUCH bigger penalty was when we had a chance to have 2 and 1 on their 8 and we can not even line up correctly.

There are calls that can be made every play that are not. You move on and overcome.

No doubt about it. The punt coverage situation cost GT the chance to play into OT.

Losing the 2nd & 1 on the 8 was probably the mistake that cost GT a win. Go up 14-7 at the half and play defense the way it was played in the 2nd half and the final score is probably reversed.

You seem to have some inside scoop on a lot of things. What about the O staff? We can not allow our D to continue to be put in the kinds of positions that our O and ST puts them in.

This was a MUST win for CG. Many have said that before the season, and we failed.

Texstinger, I too see the play of the game as us having 2nd and 1 from the 8 as they key mistake when we backed ourselves up and had to punt from the 34 yard line.

3 red zone possessions and just 1 score. Pathetic.

They missed the face mask ...

call on that play as well. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I didn't see the block in the back on the punt return but there's no doubt that Landry was held or he may have made the tackle near where the ball was fielded.

Worst no-call I've ever seen. That made a 30 yard difference. What a disgrace. Almost 24 hours later and I can't even begin to get over the game. I need another beer.

the issue isn\'t the calls they missed on UGA

The issue is the calls that they did not miss on us.

We have to at least give the refs a chance to not call us for such flagrant and obvious fouls as jumping off sides, grabbing defensive player jersey's in front of refs for extended periods of time, and having ineligible men downfield.

I'm sick of hearing officiating as an excuse. The refs reviewed a pass interference call in our favor by reviewing whether or not the ball was tipped. No ACC or SEC crew has ever used review for that purpose. As Bob Griese said on TV, he wasn't even sure that the refs could legally review for that.

The calls went both ways. We got totally hosed on the late hit call, but we caught a huge break on the play review with the tipped ball.

We lost because we lack player discipline, basic coaching skills, an offensive coordinator with common sense to throw the ball to our best player, and player excecution. And lest I forget to mention, the last INT was Bilbo's fault not Reggie's.

We did not lose because of officiating.

Re: the issue isn\'t the calls they missed on UGA

Good Lord, those guys(the refs) replayed a dozen plays in the first quarter. Both good and bad for us. You can't sit here and complain that one call cost us the game! We played hard and UGAg played harder. Its disappointing, but thats the way it is. Refs cant see everything-it happens in every game!

Yoda
The contact on of the penalty cannot be reviewed but when the tip or if the tip occurred can be reviewed.

I hadn't even considered this. Please explain. Just curious.

Re: the issue isn\'t the calls they missed on UGA

it was both of their faults. Dbo didn't come back for the ball and reggie threw it to the wrong side.
