I was always of the mindset that run "north-south" just meant to run up and down the field, rather than sideways "east-west", like looking at a compass. North/south = up/down, east/west = side to side.

I was actually pretty underwhelmed by Heinz Field when I went up there for a game a few years ago. The stands are so far away from the field. It isn't a bad stadium, but certainly isn't great.
