And I have one thing to say:

It was a GUTSY PLAY by Reggie to lean forward and down the ball instead of taking the safety. Someone (center? guard?) astoundingly missed their block, and Reggie never really had a chance, but it was a great effort to lean forward and down it at the half yard line.

Yes, I had no idea what happened at the game, but when I watched it I thought it was pretty slick. It could've backfired but I don't think he would've done it without our guy there to fall on it. What instinct by Reggie.

Talk about a huge difference, because then Brooks punts it 63 yards, so instead of a safety and kicking off, they get worse field position than they would've had on a kickoff ;p

Must have been pretty windy at the time...:laugher:

When did this happen in the game?

I don't think Reggie intended to lay it out there like that. He thought he was going down and wanted to put the ball over the line so he would be whistled down at the one. When the ball hit the ground it came out of his hand but his knee wasn't down yet. We were lucky the lineman was there, but I don't think that was exactly what Reggie was planning. Either way it saved a safety.

Whoops. Edited. That's what I get for posting while intoxicated.

It was the play right before the mega-uberpunt.

Wouldn't that be a situation of the "ground causing the fumble" - which we all know isn't possible?

Well.......it turned out ok anyway. With all the defenders right there on the play, I can't see why they didn't go for the ball first. Fortunately our Center (I think it was) got on the ball and saved our case. If the ones closest to the ball (Miami) had fell on it, a "safety" would have been a welcome verdict.

I don't think he was down, that's why it wasn't the ground causing a fumble. IIRC you can put the ball down and not be down if your body hasn't hit the ground.

I may be wrong, but I was assuming that the ground can't cause a fumble as well, or is that only in the NFL? I thought the ball has to coming out before you hit the ground. Contact with the ground isn't considered a fumbled if I'm not mistaken.

If he was ruled down it wouldn't have mattered if he handed the ball to a Cane player.

Gutsy play? I thought it was pretty boneheaded...like the time he got the safety during the VT game a couple years ago.

I wish he would have thrown it away. We were extremely lucky that the D didn't pick it up and score 7 on the play. Next time, Reggie, throw the ball away! Please!

I haven't watched the replay yet BUT if he throws the ball away and he's still between the tackles (in the endzone) it would be intentional grounding and the result would be the same as a sack in the endzone....a safety. Unless he takes the risk of throwing {near} an eligible receiver and getting it picked in the opponent's redzone.

If he could have gotten rid of it without being called for intentional grounding then yeah, throw it away. But by the time he went down, it was smart to get the ball out of the end zone. The problem was that he dropped it, not the idea.

#61 Rhodes completely missed his block or confused with the center over the cover but we were EXTREMELY lucky.

Actually in the NFL the ground CAN cause a fumble, because if you hit the ground without contact from the opposing team you are not down and you can lose possession.

This case is not a matter of the ground causing a fumble per se, it is more akin to an unintentional fumblerooski since Reggie essentially set the ball on the ground and let go of it.

Gutsy and boneheaded are not mutually exclusive. Running directly into a brick wall at full speed is not necessarily wise, but it is most certainly gutsy.

The point is the ground can't cause a fumble if you're down. But Reggie wasn't down when he put the ball on the ground so it was a moot point. You can put the ball down and not be downed.

Sigged.
