I was out of town this weekend on business and wanted to ask how many backups on the OL made it on the field and how did they do?

I think everyone played. The only guy who I saw that didn't play that puzzled me was big D Brown #54 I think. I wonder why he didn't play?

The 2nd and 3rd team OL all played. The 2nd team played as least a full quarter. The two recent position changes from defensive (Brown and Folkner) played as well. Brown - RT; Folkner - Center. All played well in my opinion.

Umm, I think all of them.

Hard to say how they did when they were up against Div2 2nd stringers. None of them looked especially bad, but I wouldn't consider us deep at OL.

Everybody Played

Second team as a unit got quite a few snaps. The third string made an appearance.

No one embarrassed themselves. No false starts (that I remember) or obvious missed blocks. They appeared well-coached.

Some have some work to do. Others are just marking time to start. Voss was a little too eager, but the talent was there and he should be a good one. Dunmon and Smith could play any week.

No one was a man among boys.

Ramblinwise1,

D Brown is #55. He played. Did well, considering he has only been on the OL for less than a month.

Everyone played...it was great to see David (only a year behind me at the same high school) finally get some playing time!

Re: Everybody Played

Thanks for the info, I've have heard good things about Dunmon, Smith and Voss. If we can find 3 to 4 to spell through out the season would be great even if we are talking 8 to 10 plays.

I would have thought that we should have run the ball better 2nd unit vs 2nd unit than we did.We did not pass much but guys ,this is a avg Iaa team!We couldn't score a TD!
This 2nd unit is not going to push the first to get better and we need that.

Hey John

Steve Spurrier agrees with you. He was disgusted with his offense generally and his offensive line specifically after the UGa game. He said that he would make changes and that players need to learn that if they are going to play they have to give 100%, and that some younger guys would be given a chance to do just that.

You said essentially the same thing after the ND game about our OL.

I'd like to see the same reaction from our coaching staff, but so far, I don't see any evidence that they believe changes are necessary.

Possibly unrelated question:

Do you think Spurrier would have said that if he felt he didn't have very many options at OL?

According to an article on Gamecock Central, USC could start 2 true freshmen on the OL this week. I am not sure how to interpret your question, but to the degree that it implies that the Cocks have better OL depth than GT, nothing from a review of their depth chart vs. our depth chart suggests that this is the case.

It is clear that Spurrier is using playing time as a motivation. John D suggested last week that we should do the same. Van Note was critical of our interior OL in the first quarter v. Samford, although the OL did pick it up in the second. I am not sure if the better result was because we ran behind Gardner and to the corners, or if the interior played better.

My opinion is that if our offensive staff was as demanding as Tenuta, we'd have a better offense. Spurrier is demanding and USC will improve. However, I have not given up on our offense yet.

Everyone wants to play, my suggestion is sit the veterans down and play the young ones. Believe me it works and the veterans take notice. no one wants to be beat out by a freshman or a RS freshman.

Fear sometimes is a great motivator.

Big difference.....South Carolina was SHUT OUT...zero points.

Gailey always call it like it is in post game press conferences...have you ever listened to all of it? Nix makes excuses sometimes (youth maybe?)....Gailey does not.

I like this quote from Gailey just today regarding the ND/Penn State game:

AJC: Notre Dame's 41-17 rout of Penn State might tempt you to say Georgia Tech must be pretty good. After all, Notre Dame had to rally to beat Tech 14-10. Notre Dame had to rally to beat Tech 14-10.
Gailey, though, isn't playing the score comparison game.
Gailey: "Outside people can do that," he said. "Inside, our guys are disappointed we didn't win the game. I don't think anybody feels any better because of the way they beat Penn State."

I do think Nix and D'Alessandris have something they need to prove this year.

I'm guessing it's the two 4 star 300lb+ guys he landed in last year's class, right?

Spurrier got 8 OL commits last year, including JUCO transfers. I'm not surprised that two of them might be ready to play. If Chan landed 8 nationally ranked OL commits last year, I think I might be calling to see some of them on the field too.
