O\'Leary: GT \"like any other college\"....WHAT????

Read the quote at the link below in the AJC...when asked about academic restraints he said Georgia Tech was "like any other college".

I can remember being at MANY a Lunch with George, Breakfast with George, etc. where he went on rants about how it was impossible to recruit kids to Tech from Georgia because the teachers were not accountable for making sure kids learned to read & write. He would then say that it may be alright for that other school out 78...but not for Georgia Tech. He would then move into analogies about putting these athletes in the same classes where kids had 1400 SAT's...and how that would just not work.

To steal the classic line from Law & Order's Sam Waterston "Were you lying then or are you lying now"

I am very disappointed in him for this. arrgh.

Guess in this case, hindsight ain't 20/20.

I do miss those free lunches though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drink1.gif

Sounds like he is lobbying for a bowl game against us.

Much as I hate to say it, I think it's safe to assume that George is always lying. It's natural to spin everything positively when he's your guy, but as time goes on we see more of what he's really about. Resume, guys with no chance to graduate, etc. He's a very good football coach. But that's pretty much it IMO.

Yeah but if you read on what he said was right. It's like any other college, academics come first.

The article is about O'Leary talking at the Touchdown Club. I don't blame him for wanting to talk about UCF and not GT. He, more than anyone, should want to put the past behind him.

"It's like any other college," O'Leary said. "You have to do all three. You have to get, first, athletes that are academically qualified and then make sure that they are kids who have good work habits. Then see if you can do things from there."

[/ QUOTE ]

That doesn't conflict with what everyone knows - it's harder to get student-athletes into Tech initially, and it's harder to keep them eligible. Not to mention that the standards were raised after GOL left.

O'Leary sure did complain about it all the time when he was here...he said flat out we could not recruit DL's because of this.

Yeah...right...academics come first at FSU, Miami, Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, LSU. I am an idiot.

You're right. Students at other schools do not have to maintain a minimum GPA to play. Also, at these schools, participants on these teams are referred to as Athlete-Students. I heard there isn't even an SAT requirement to be an AS. And, you get penalized with not being allowed to go to class if you don't play well on the field.

Thank you for your correction.

nc, I believe your comment about "guys with no chance to graduate" is off base. THWG

Re: O\'Leary: GT \"like any other college\"....WHAT????

I'm not talking about everyone of his recruits, but if you take a look at his classes, there were several each year who didn't pan out at all. Then look at some of the seniors who didn't come close. It's not all black and white I agree. But he wasn't anywhere near as concerned about graduating as Tech is now. IMO he was more concerned with staying eligible.
