60 years ago. Bear Bryant brought his undefeated Crimson Tide on a 2 year win streak into rainy Grant Field to face Dodd’s Jackets led by Billy Lothridge. The Bear was worried sick about meeting defeat while he stared out the window at the Georgian Hotel smoking one Chesterfield after another. His intuition was correct, as Dodd’s boys handed him a 7-6 defeat, derailing his National Title chances. One of the best Tech wins all time!

Chesterfields. If that was really the Bear’s cigarette of choice they should have used the Bear as a celebrity spokesman. I can’t think of Chesterfields being known for anything else.

Supposedly he went back and forth between those and Lucky Strikes

I was a "damn good rat" in the stands that day, and it was by far the most intense football game I have ever seen, and the most intense atmosphere as well. The student section was packed almost an hour before kickoff, and the rest of the stands were full shortly afterwards. The cheers of the day were "Remember Darwin Holt" and "Namath can't do it." Although I have forgotten the details of the action, I can never forget the impact it had on all who were there. WHAT A GAME !!!

Kim King talks a lot about that game in his book

On this date in 2022 I took Tulsa laying 14 points at home against a USF team with no head coach and starting a 3rd string, true freshman quarterback in 27 degree Oklahoma weather.

I recall reading that a sport reporter asked Bear; "what do you think about all those liquor bottles being thrown at
him from the GT student section?" To which Bear Bryant replied; "I would have thought them Tech folks would have
drunk a better brand of whiskey!"
