From the AJC:
Greg Smith and Andrew Smith are pushing for that starting slot though.
“I’d like to see Greg Smith make some improvements,” Johnson said. “It’s a position where there is a lot of competition.”
Another position up for grabs will be the wide receiver position, opposite Demaryius Thomas. Correy Earls figured to be the starter but has been limited all preseason with injuries. He’s back, but still not at 100 percent.
“He’s got enough time to make it back as a starter, but he’s got to beat out the other guys now,” Johnson said. “Tyler [Melton] has done some good things and has earned the right to be where he is.”
Johnson added that only center Dan Voss and Gardner had nailed down starting positions on the line.::::::::::::::::

This is something Gailey would never do. A starter was a starter regardless. There were a lot of good players who never made it to be starter because Gailey coddled the starters. PJ has a simple philosophy: you don't practice, you don't play. Just one example where PJ will succeed where Gailey failed.

Gailey was one of the worst motivators I've ever seen.

...he's a better coach...

beej67,
didn't actually read any posts in this thread

I had two head coaches in high school. One who was a "lets all have fun" coach who was a failure. The other was a grab your face mask and scream at you kind of coach who would only reward your latest performance.
I will let you guess which one motivated me the most.

PJ is the "Let's all have fun" coach. He cancelled practice for DODGEBALL!!!!!!! WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!!!!! THEY NEED TO PRACTICE NOT FUMBLING!!!!!! AND PASSING PLAYS!!!!!!! THE TRIPLE OPTION WILL NOT WORK IN THE ACC!!!!!!!!

im pretty sure PJ is not a grab your facemask and scream kind of guy. a recent AJC article actually specifically said that. but, he does foster competition among the players.

gailey relied too much on the players having internal motivation, and that was combined with a lack of on the field leadership.

pj is more directly focused, but i dont think he is really the "bully coach"

Gailey just wasn't a great college coach. His style was better suited for the league.

Its been said before but bears repeating.

I do believe that this will be the most successful coaching transition in Tech history.

This is the point IMO. Gailey clearly had that pro mindset and couldn't adjust to the psychological side of college ball. For example, in the pros you never see the QB benched unless he's really done. They almost never come back with that team. In college it happens all the time and guys come back in the same game. It's just a different game on the two levels and Chan never figured that out.

The biggest difference between CG and PJ to me is "winning additude." Others have alluded to CG'd NFL mentality. Many years in the NFL a winning percentage over 500 gets you in the playoffs. In 2008 college football the same winning percentage gets you to a lower tier bowl game.

Unlike the NFL you can not accept that you are going to have some loses and be at the top of your conference. PJ has won everywhere he has been in college football. He understands that in college you put your best players on the field and put them in position to make plays and go win the football game. Some games you win 13-3 and others 41-38 and it just doesn't matter just find a way to win that day.

He is a true College Coach and everyone knows who is in charge, he will be the next Bobby Dodd

How do the players like PJ? I heard that some don't like him, but of course I would expect that anyway in this kind of changeover.

The fact is - there are many success stories for both styles (when has Bobby Bowden ever gotten in a player's face? but pretty successful). There are also many instances of failure for both styles (Coughlin has been both a "success" and a "failure" as a tough guy coach for the Giants).

The point is you could go on for days arguing either side but there is no right answer.
