Onside Kick

Okay so there's no way we should have missed that Beamer was going to do an onside kick sometime Thursday night. Pure stupidity not to anticipate that. I was at the game, however, and I didn't get to see a replay of that play. Did the ball bounce off of the kicker? It sure looked like it did from where I was. Doesn't that give us the ball where he touches it if its before the 10-yards? That was the breaking point for the team. They were totally deflated (except for Michael Johnson - he's just fun to watch) from that point on. There were several calls I questioned all night, but that was the biggest one. We got away with a couple block in the backs on returns, and they got away with every way to hold in the book... I'm thinking officiating is going down the drain quick around the ACC.

Im not gonna blame this one on officiating at all. Replays on TV clearly showed he didnt touch the ball. Only bad call all night was one where VT deserved an off. pass interference flag on a TD pass but didnt get it.

They just got outplayed.

gsu_paintballer,
thinks VT puts WRs in at corner

(hey beej67, see what I did there?)

I certainly wasn't expecting an onside kick especially after we marched the ball down the field on the opening drive, albeit for a FG. I agree, the kick looked as if it may have hit the kicker prior to going 10 yds. I actually thought he jumped on it after 9 yards and slid forward, but I never saw a replay. Either way, it was definitely a turning point in the game as we never seemed to have the wind in our sails again (save Michael Johnson who is freaking awesome!).

Legal play, the ball clearly went 10 yards before they touched it. I don't know why anyone would expect an onsides kick there, but you're supposed to be awake for it on every kick.

In retrospect, we could have seen it coming since the onside kick is what BC used to beat VT the week before.

BC had no other option at that point. That was completely different than kicking an onside kick in the 1st quarter.

It certainly looks like a stroke of genius on Beamer's part though. If he doesn't get it, it's basically a manageable turnover, but if he does get it, he completely knocks the wind out of our defense's sails after that grueling drive for a field goal. I'm sure he knew that if he got that onside kick, the game was Vt's.

It's a risk worth taking. I think I read somewhere that the odds of recovering an onside in a surprise situation is about 75% (in the NFL) and our offense probably doesn't score that often from the VT 40 anyway.

There was little question that it would work if kicked properly. Beamer obviously noticed that our special team immediately retreats to set up blocks just as the ball is kicked.

Just hope that Chan was taking notes on how to coach in college on this one.
