Optimistic about WR's

Reading about the spring practices from a distance I can't help but be very pleased with WR position. I thought '06 recruits Thomas and Earls were good signees, and it seems as though both had great springs. Up close with Thomas a few times last fall I was impressed with his size and demeanor.

I think the Gailey quote about our passing game makes sense. Certainly we will miss Calvin, he was a terrific player with talent seldom seen. But, we had a QB that did not make sequential reads very well and our passing game was too predictable. Plus we seldom led CJ very well, too many passes were jump balls thrown in his direction. The first half of the Gator Bowl TB threw some of the best balls to Calvin he saw in his career.

If Thomas, Johnson, Earls and others give us three or even four good WR options and TB can go through reads quickly and correctly, the passing game should improve. Throw Grant, Choice, Cox, and TE's into the receiving mix, and defenses will have a hard time predicting who to double.

Finally, I would say it sounds as though our new OC had a good Spring. The line is sound, the running effective, and the passing pretty good except for last Wednesday's report.

Nice post

1. You are correct to think out WR's and our OC will be good next year.

2. As great as the rest of the defense is - I can tell you that our CB's are the very worst I have seen in a long time - on any team.

Taylor is looking good, but they made him look a lot better. Two of the last TD's would have been INT's against any ACC team or UGA.

The last two TD's worried me because (A) Taylor threw them and (B) they were TD's - meaning that
they were both balls that shouldn't have been thrown, and both balls that should have been picked.

It was a QB and a CB problem at the same time.

I will say that Taylor threw some absolute beauties also. I'll also say that Taylor is a smart guy who might have simply known who he was throwing against, and probably won't throw those same passes against a better defender.

You could also say that Taylor trusted his WR enough to let them fight for the ball - but - unfortunately they didn't even have to.

I'll also say that the defender is a guy that was in position to make the plays and then wet the bed when he got all turned around, so at least all he needs is the part that can be coached - between the ears. At least he had the speed, and understanding to get there - and he has all summer to think about it.

I'm just hoping our guys all get healthy fast, so that we can adjust. I see no way we win games with the CB's I saw yesterday.

But - They have the summer to get it between the ears and watch film and get other starters healthy.

.
I think/hope this will fuel them to work hard this summer to get better. Also can't help but think they are facing on of the best QBs they'll see all year in practice. At this point I'd only give the nod to BC's QB.

I also hope this doesn't give TB a false sense of what he can and can't do if the DBs are playing as poor as you say.

We're still missing some guys techfowl and have some pretty highly regarded DBs on the way in. I would agree that CB is the position we're shakiest in right now. But also remind us that it's a long way til September.

Yep -

You and I are on the same page. It's not like all is lost. It's just that what I saw yesterday at CB won't win us any games.

We have guys coming in, we have guys hurt, and we have guys that could have made plays yetsterday - which means that hopefully, they will be making plays by the season opener.

More of the same

Have not been to a practice but it would seem we have a great combination of receiving weapons. Big receiver (Thomas), super fast receiver(Earls), receivers with moves after the catch (Smith and Johnson), tight ends who can run a route and catch (Peek and the guys who've played this spring) and finally, backs who can catch (Choice and our fullbacks) at a couple who can line up at running back or slot receiver(Grant and Evans). And from what I can tell from the reports, Bond intends to use all of them.

On the CBs, is it realistic to think we can get help from the incoming freshmen? So much is said about the complexity of Tenuta's system and how often inexperienced players are out of place. Could true freshmen be ready with only August camp to learn?
