Note: This post is long so if you don't do long see you!

Now that recruiting is complete, I have been putting some thought to how our personnel might be deployed in our new 3 – 4 defense. I took a look at our roster and tried to sort them by weight and my perceived view of their potential to perform in our new alignment. So far I have come up with the following;

The middle man or nose guard would need to be a Gorilla, hard to move yet capable of penetration when needed. Here is what I see there:

1) Brandon Adams
2) B. Glanton
3) A. Smith

This would require a rotation to keep the big men as fresh as possible and I think we would need to go at least 3 deep here.

The 2 guys that line up next to him would also need to be large yet quick. Here is what I see:

1) Desmond Branch
2) Antwan Owens
3) Tyler Merriweather

1) Quon Griffin
2) Cerge-Henderson
3) Chimedza / Martin

I think again we would need at least a frequent 2 man rotation. I put the freshman Griffin in here because I think he has enough dog in him to play right away.

The next level consists of 4 guys that play linebacker and at times, defensive end on one side or the other. This is the area where we will see some interesting combinations. Here is my thing for now:

Outside

1) Saint Amour
2) Dingle
3) Johns

1) BJ Swilling
2) David Curry
3) Domineck

I think this would give us the speed rush we are looking for from the outside when we need to bring it. A lot true freshmen in my mix here but I think that is why we recruited them.

Inside

1) Mitchell
2) Tre Jackson
3) J. Henderson

1) V. Alexander
2) T. Cooksey
3) Q. Jackson

These guys are the most experienced part of our defense.

Finally you have the secondary or the last level of defense. We will have a lot of change in this area and I am basing my depth chart on limited direct observation of a lot of these guys. But here is my best guess:

Corners

1) Jalen Johnson
2) Ajani Kerr
3) Tre Swilling

1) Lamont Simmons
2) Askew
3) J. King

Safeties

1) J. Thomas
2) C. Campbell
3) G. Bonds

1) A. J. Gray
2) K. Oliver
3) T. Carpenter

I think Gray could be moved up with linebacker group to provide more speed and striking power to that group. The freshman Thomas strikes me as the crown jewel of our class and I expect him to be a starter day one.

So who am I leaving out? Most of the ones not on the list are red shirt freshmen who might very well be better than some I have listed but based on limited information I just was not comfortable in putting them in the depth chart although, they may get there. Guys in that category are:

1) Kelton Dawson – DE
2) Cortez Alston – DE
3) Avery Showell – S
4) D. Williams – CB
5) J. Jackson – CB / True Freshman
6) Z. Walton – CB / True Freshman
7) J. Cole – CB

There are yet other walk ons who have an outside chance of playing time that I have not mentioned because I think other than Tyler Vernon a lightweight DE none have a real chance of breaking the 3 deep.

Any way it will be a fun season to see where all these guys fall out and which one emerge as leaders and stars.

Would like to see AJ used in some olb packages. I think he'll have a big year this season.

Looks like we have enough talent to get the job done. It was frustrating to watch some of the talent we had last yr being wasted. Players in wrong positions and other guys just sitting that should have been playing. Roof was really a terrible coach and I think we will see that this yr.

I worry most about NT and ILB. I like Adams but we can't seem to keep him fresh. I worry about athleticism at ILB.

I think we're very talented at OLB and S. I hope someone can step and supplant Simmons at CB.

I believe Jalen Johnson is a safety. He's bigger, hits hard, and I don't think he has the quickness to play corner. Kerr may be our best bet here unless someone recruited the past couple of years is able to step in and compete.

If Griffin starts next year I will be disappointed that we don't already have better players on the roster. If the scouting reports are correct he should play.

Does Jaquan Henderson have the beef to play inside? I didn't realize he was listed at 197. May be a hybrid at that size.

Does the new DC run the nickel much?

I can’t see Kyle Cerge-Henderson as a DE. I think Branch and Glanton move to DE.

Yeah Jalen Johnson is a bit of an odd bird, too big for corner yet not big enough for LB. Safety should be his position and he may end up there especially if Gray moves into the Linebacker group. JJ has some skills but we have never been able to put him in the right spot. Henderson may fall into the same category and may end up at safety.

Yeah I don't give a damn what color the Nose Guard is as long as the SOB plays like King Kong. I believe Adams can play more if we manage his snaps effectively. I think the freshman Austin Smith has the skill set to play the position early and I think Glanton has already proved he can play some.

I left Jacob Brashear out of my 3 deep because he seems to stay injured. He would plug in at the inside LB group.

I think in this new defense, one of what was our defensive ends in the old defense, actually stands up and either plays on the line or drops off the line like a linebacker. Theoretically this creates more flexibility in how we deploy that position against the offense. Since Saint Amore played the DE position last year I just think he has the right size to fit into that slot in the new defense. Yeah he will have to drop into pass coverage occasionally but he does have good speed and strength. I really think that is the key position in our new defense. You need your lead dog in that spot. A man that can disrupt. The mobile, agile and hostile dude.

Go Jackets!

JJ too big for corner? Idk about y'all, but I would love having big corners. The Austin twins were great players for us, but having 5'9" DBs going up against big receivers isn't a great recipe.

Agreed we need more size in the DB.
