Not a knock against the kid but is anybody else concerned that an FCS transfer is starting in our secondary? What does that tell you about our overall talent level?

Plenty of FBS-level players end up in the FCS because recruiting is not an exact science. A lot of FCS players even make it to the NFL. And this guy was a conference standout, not an average FCS player.

So it could mean our talent level was mediocre or it could mean the guy is really good.

Not that worried about it. The kid apparently knows the coach's system cold. And that's an advantage. He knows where to go and when to go there. You could be more athletically talented, but if you don't know what you're doing out there, you're not helping.

The fact that one particular player is starting tells me nothing about our overall talent level. Is your argument that we should never take players from lower divisions who could help us? Or that we should start a 3 star recruit who isn't ready instead?

It also allows him to be abit of a field general for Woody. Multiple linebackers have stated as much.

That an fcs transfer is better than our fbs recruits.

Besides, CPJ isn’t a fan of starting a freshman in his first college game. If the guys behind him are better, we’ll see them soon enough
Also, we’re talking about starting against Alcorn State, not West Virginia. Settle down.

That a senior who has been playing college ball for three years (two of which under our new safeties coach) is a more reliable option than a true freshman the first game of the season.

Correct. So objectively, this transfer (=fcs transfer) is better than our current fbs recruits (=fbs recruits).

I see the exception police are out in full force.

To answer the question, yes, I think it most likely says something. Tech has rarely been the recipient of great transfers, so short selling such players has historically been the right move. If one of them is starting, there is a high probability that it says more about the existing talent than the transfer.

First year of a new defense and the guy in question was a star player on one of our new coach's team last season. I'm more worried about the Lamont Simmons injury.
