Part of me feels badly for Chan Gailey.....

When its all said and done, he will be summarized by the play of his QB, Reggie Ball. Ball's performance last night was very bad. Over thrown receivers, poor decisions, etc.

I said this last year and will say it this year... had we had even average to decent QB play last year, we would have won 8 games easily. This year, we would probably be 8-1 right now.

I'm not trying to take a shot at a student athlete, but our QB is not good and hasn't been good for sometime. This all falls back on coaching. Reggie Ball looks a smidge better than he was his freshman year.

It would have been interesting to see how Gailey would have done with a better QB. But I doubt we'll ever know that answer. He has made his own bed with Reggie Ball and the fact that we have no one who has the ability to relieve Reggie is even worse.

I truly wonder what Gailey and Tenuta could have done Godsey's Senior year. I personally think Chan is a better coach than O'Leary, but if he never gets any kind of offensive Production to go with Coach Ts Defense then we will never see him with a QB worth anything. It's not too late to switch RB to Safety...he still has a Redshirt Year

Disagree with your statement about "feeling badly" for the coach somewhat. He is the head coach in his fourth year. If QB play is indeed the root cause of our offensive inefficiencies and resulting w-l record then CCG is the only human being on the face of this planet who has the control and authority to address the problem. No one on this board can fix any of our problems.Same with ST issues,OL issues, whatever. It is his job to recruit and train players to perform. I guarantee that the offensive play would be worse if I were the starting QB...but would it be my fault (I am a 47 year old Caucasian male with NCAA eligibilty remaining, out of shape and run a 6.8 40) or the coaches for not having a better option and/or putting me in a position where I cannot suceed?

I'm sure all the stats are out there to build a nice spreadsheet on the results of Chan Gailey quarterbacks thru the years. Maybe someone will put it all together one day.

However, I don't think its necessary to understand that CG has a history of being associated with underachieving Qb's.
His most accomplished "student" reportedly wanted CG fired. Another was reduced to tears, and then faded away.
I think its safe to say that the quarterback position is CG's bugaboo.

I really wanted CG to make it. Probably for the same reasons that others have had in another city. However, his stubborness is famous and that will probably be his undoing here.

Underachieving QBs? You'll have to fill me in man. The only QB I'm aware of that Chan worked with in his NFL career who made any issues about Chan was Aikman. That's mainly due to the fact that Chan tried to change the Cowboys offense to a read and throw scheme instead of just throwing it out to Irvin, et al and letting them get it. Troy didn't like that. But the stats will show that Aikman's production was higher under Gailey than just before and just after he was there.

Other than that however, Elway did pretty well while Chan was coaching him, Slash had his best year by far and the Dolphins actually won games with Jay Feidler of all people at QB. So I don't know what you're referring to.

None of that changes the fact that Tech has not had good QB play since he's been here though. But I think you're stretching to try to make your point.

"...his stubborness is famous..."

What I don't understand is why he is so stubborn. It's not like his schemes are fooling anybody. It's not like anyone has ever touted his playcalling. Where in the world does he get off being stubborn?

You will get to see Gailey w/ Garner and then we will have MORE of a view on how CG coaches QB's.

So you think Gailey's going to be around a long time, because I don't see Garner starting next year.

It's hard to feel sorry for someone who is so obstinate. If he were being flexible and trying all the possibilities and still couldn't make things work I would be sympathetic.

He decided a few weeks into fall practice of his freshman year to go with Reggie Ball, and he has stubbornly stuck with it in the face of all reason.

I remember Bill Curry playing multiple QB's at once, I remember Bobby Ross doing it, and I remember George O'Leary/Ralph Friedgen unable to decide on who to play after Little Joe left. (Remember the musical QB's in the Central Florida game?) I also remember Bill Lewis deciding on Tommy Luginbill for QB and stubbornly sticking with him while it tore the team apart.

No good has come from Chan's QB obstinance or Chan's OC obstinance so far, and I don't expect any in the future.

Lets go over it again BOR...

We are in a bowl this year. Barring scandal he will coach in 2006.

I think Law and I will be happy to predict a bowl for 2006. A bowl in 2006 gets Chan to 2007. No bowl would require poor play from Ball and then Chan will show us the options at QB. But I would be shocked if it comes to that. If Chan can win 6 with these guys, he has to win 6 next year.

2007 will be a big year for Chan. If we end up with another average QB and 90th ranked offense then I doubt he will have many cheerleaders.

O'Leary has a shot at 9-10 wins this year with a team that did not win a game last year and maybe his second Bobby Dodd Award. Chan might know X's and O's better, but he is definitely not as good as a HC.

I know sometimes, I sit in the stand and wonder "Where in the hell is he throwing it?". Especially when it is obvious that he is not throwing it away. Some passes just seem so errant that it defies being just a broken play.
