When did taking someones chest pad and shoving it into their face become a hands to the face penalty?

Also, why is there no need to measure when you spot the ball short of the 30 yard line and the first down marker is on the other side of the line? Don't answer, ACC refs know that is a first down without measuring.

Good luck FSU. You will get no calls against Clemson.

Agree on both counts. I'll have to rewatch the hands to face penalty but it looked to me that our guy completely owned his man and was totally driving him back into the backfield.

As for the first down. I was up ready to make some 3rd down noise and then I realized it was 1st down when no one else was yelling.

Looked like hands to the face to me, the guy's helmet was facing the sky. How they managed to see that and not the other linemen he was sandwiched between pushing him in the back is beyond me though.

I agree, it is almost like holding during pass protection is rarely called anymore.

That first down call was complete BS. He spotted the ball short. It wasn't like a few uears ago against UNC (I think) where the ref moved the ball prior to the measurement (which they still didn't get). There was the chalk line right there. If it doesn't cross, it don't cross.

Also, I think Gotsis owned both the center and the RB. He was in beast mode the entire game. I will be surprised if he doesn't get drafted.

O-linemen are allowed to block in the back during pass protection when it's near the line of scrimmage. I don't recall this particular play but if you're wondering why a block in the back wasn't called that could be the reason.

I do agree with coit though, anecdotally I feel like I've seen a lot more (uncalled) holding in pass protection in recent years. Some of it is pretty bad.

I actually think the refs were terrible both ways. I thought that was a TD by fsu on the drive after the first int by thomas. The WR clearly caught the ball and I thought he had the toe down.

Hands to the face looked legit to me live and on the replay in the stadium. Maybe it was a bad call, but it LOOKED so bad that I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I said "hands to the face" before I ever saw the flag.

But yeah, not measuring a first down spot late in the game was pretty terrible. I guess they were trying to "let 'em play" and not slow down the tempo (and BTW, kudos to ESPN2 for not having an intolerable number of TV timeouts), but yeah, it seemed like they should have measured.
