being carried off the field on the shoulders of players was was great. I was 12 at the time and a big time Tech fan and it was my first true victory over UGA, I was estatic. The picture showed a mob scene on the field and some little Tech player who probably didn't weigh 160 getting ready to jump in the air. I saw the picture in the AJC the next day and I believe the caption was "JOY RETURNS TO TECHSVILLE." Does anybody have that picture they could post?

I know the picture well. The player about to jump was Herman Lam, a very smart student who became a professor at Florida (I think).

This one? (from the Hive)

Does anyone know what that sign says behind the stands? I assume that is the horseshoe end.

Could it be lights? I know most all of the games were early/mid afternoon back then, but it sure looks like a 2x4 bank of lights to me.

And am I right that this is near the south end of the field facing more or less southwest, with the old YMCA/alumni house in the background?

Not The Picture But A Good One....

The picture I'm talking about must have been taken just a few seconds before or later, Coach Carson was leaning over hugging somebody. I remember being so disappointed as a kid when Tech fired Carson, I vowed never to pull for them again. Of course that lasted about one day and I was back on board. I remember being so excited when Fulcher came in and changed the uniforms back to the gold pants and helments. The first game was against Tenn and was suppose to be a big matchup between Eddie McAshan and Conridge Hollaway. We got blasted that game but recouped and had a decent season. We would have definitely whipped the pups if Eddie had not gone AWOL, I've never forgiven him for that.

The sign says WGST (and I think underneath AM 790?). I guess that's the sign you're asking about. I think I remember them taking it down around the late 1970's...

Thanks GT

I really didn't know that, but would it not be great to have W...GST back on board again as the Flagship station of Tech? Let 790 continue on with their cute skits.

Anyone know the story of Herman and his family? He was my first roomy at Tech.

He was, I believe, half athletic ship and half academic. His sister and brother in law were very smart as well. They had a child named Bobby Woo (sp?) who was the 200 millionth American. His picture was in many magazines and I believe the family received many accolades and gifts from companies like Maytag. Believe this is correct.

As the years go by young Bobby later graduated from my ole high school and he scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT.

You know when I look at the picture of the old south stands I can't help but say I miss it. That was one of the 2 or 3 things I most remembered about the stadium when I was growing up.

I don't miss the water running down the wall in the bathrooms or the underneath sections of the east side (before the boxes were installed).

I know it will be many years, but one day I hope to see a new and improved version of the old horsehoe south stands in place of the current building...

I agree. I don't know how most feel, but Wardlaw is an eyesore. I hated it while they were building it and hated it even worse when they were done. At least least we aren't kicking extra points into a huge wall any longer with the addition of the new south stands and relocation of the field.

Wardlaw will obviously stand for many many years. If it were being planned today, I'm sure it would be done very differently. Kinda like what Clemson has in mind with their addition.

My sentiments follow some of you others regarding the horseshoe south stands. If Wardlaw had to be built, I wish it would have been at the north end of BDS.

The old horseshoe could have been double-decked by now and the eyesore (IMO anyway) that is the second level of the north stands would not exist.

WGST back then was at AM 940 or 920. Something

like that, not at 790. 790 was WQXI in Dixie I think.

Does anybody remember what the numbers on

the back of our helments that year were for? I think I know what they mean.

Re: Does anybody remember what the numbers on

100th Anniversary of College Football........ almost every college team wore 'em, 'cept the Domers.... even USCWest & Texas wore 'em...

Re: Herman & Bennie Lam

Don't forget... Herman's brother Bennie walked on and played on the Scout Team as a WR.... rather smart student (don't know if he was as smart as Herman - only guys like Jack O'Neill, Meade Sutterfield, or Ronnie Enzweiler could compete with Herman) in his own right.

Thanks guys. I thought so but in the picture it

looked like 106 or 104 so I wasn't sure.

I Saw The 69 ND Game On TV And You Could Tell....

the team was starting to turn the corner. They gave a highly ranked ND team a decent game for a team that had just won 3 games. I believe in was Jeff Ford who took an INT or a KO return 100+ yards. I think the coaches knew 1970 was shaping up to be a good year.

Herman made 1580 on the SAT with 780 on the...

verbal. He took English as a second language as he was born in China.
