Interestin' factoid: Youngstown St. coach was none other than Jim Tressel, who jumped directly from I-AA to I-A.
Video of the other championship against Montana was pretty cool. Navy v. Notre Dame on NBC.com is awesome too and takes less than 30 min. to watch.
One thing I noticed from the Navy videos. PJ has historically has had an explosive return game on ST's.
I think this is because (1) he tends to have a plethora of shifty A-back types on his roster, one of whom is bound to be a good return guy, (2) his A-backs, WRs, & OL are rigorously trained to make blocks in space. This skill translates beautifully into the return game. Watch some old Navy games on cstv and you'll see what I mean. NFL coaches have commented on how well trained PJ's guys are at this. (3) his unique organizational approach to ST's. Watch Jeff Monken interview on ramblinwreck.com to hear about this. PJ forces the whole team and every coach to have ownership on every ST unit. Very clever way to go about ST's.
Regarding a great return game, a short field is a ############ to any offense. However, it gets really tough to stop PJ with a short field because he gets very aggressive in his playcalling. Also PJ will frequently go for it (and almost always make it) on 4th down when he has decent field position.
I am hoping we combine the improved punt/kick off coverage we had under Coach Kelly with a dynamic return game.
