I don't know if this has been posted anywhere. But a couple of friends of mine were talking about the NCAA proposing a playoff system. Anyone know anything about it?

I think 8 teams is too many. 4 would be perfect as it would actually maintain the significance of the regular season games.

I don't really mind the current system as it is, flawed as it may be. And 8 teams is way too many. 4 teams is alright, as it's basically the +1 format. People will still complain, but whatever.

I wonder how many university presidents will trumpet this if it turns out that they wouldn't make nearly as much money....

8 Super Conferences, winners of each CCG plays in the playoff.

9 conference games
2 out of conference games that you have to play within teams in the 8 super conferences.

That will never happen. BCS schools will receive less money from bowl payouts so they will never agree to it.

Getting rid of preseason polls is one small thing the press could do to alleviate a lot of problems with the BCS system. Come out with a top 25 list 4 or 5 weeks into the season so that everyone technically has a fair shot of being evaluated.

LSU lost 2 games pretty late in the season but remained in the title hunt because they were preseason #1. That's not right.

LSU was preseason #2, but I agree with getting rid of preseason polls.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that the (u)ga president is just pandering to the publicity loving pollsters to get a higher preseason ranking.

The other character in me got the crap beaten out of him by the conspiracy theorist.

I think it should also be noted that Kansas not only had a mere 1 loss (to a team ranked No. 4 at the time), but they put up more than 40 points in 8 of their 12 regular season games.

They could easily make every arguement that UGA has made. Yet, any outcry over a paltry No. 7 ranking hasn't hit my radar screen.

You can't do it. They tried when they delayed the release of the first BCS standings until October, but the AP and other such polls are independent, and they'll do whatever they please. (They made that point when they demanded the BCS quit using their poll for their formula.)

As for a playoff, I really don't like the current system. Either go back to the way the bowl season was before the BCS/Bowl Alliance, or totally scrap the whole thing and do what Mover suggested above, with one additional suggestion: you have your 8 super conferences of 12 teams each= 96 teams. Well, currently you have 119 DI teams, so something has to give. Either promote one more and have 10 conferences (and either have 1st round byes or 6 wild cards), or work out a system similar to European soccer where the last place team(s) in the upper division move down and the first place teams move up to keep the number at 96. Then DI would have more to do with winning than stadium size and season ticket sales.

While there's no greater incentive than relegation, it would be impossible to implement unless every team played one another beacuse relegated teams would argue that they would not be relegated had they played in an easier conference with an easier coference schedule. I can already see the last SEC Team complaining that if they were in the Big East they could avoid relegation, it is fun to imagine though specialy in a year when we could send Ugag to Div I-AA by beating them in the last game (like a lot of soccer teams have done with their rivals).
