There is a post on the hive for a plea to Rad to start selling beer at GT sporting events. I like this idea. They sold it at the 1990 chhmpionship game in Orlando and stopped sales at the start of the 4th quarter. There were no problems that I saw. Beer sales along with a hard nosed policy to not tolerate drunkeness would be a positive step in our program. Do y'all agree??

I agree, but the no alcohol sales policy on campus is set by the board of regents and Rad will have little or no ability to change that. Even if he were so inclined.

I dont think it would change too much...Except that people would be drinking beer at games instead of the liquor they flasked with.

Sold under very controlled circumstances, AND

not allowed in the stands at any time. I'm against selling beer at our home athletic events, but even if I weren't, it's disingenuous to pretend that buying and consuming beer in the Club Lounge is the same as buying and consuming throughout BDS.

Re: Stick..

I never claimed it to be the same, just making the point that alcohol is now sold in BDS, period.

Re: Stick..

Can you actually purchase it, or is it just "given" with the price of admission? When I have sat in the club level, I was always "given" several beers through the ticket, and then was "given" a few extra, but never did I officially purchase anything.

I think you're right. There used to be a state law or regents mandate that no alcohol beverages could be sold on campus of state school. Of course they could serve it at functions, but not for sale as a general concession.

However, I think that there are also rules about having open containers in public in Ga (like walking down the street) so they could nail most tailgaters if they wanted too, but its become such an accepted practice that its tolerated.

You can buy beer at the bowl games and the Dome cause they are off campus.

Re: Stick..

gosh Money, I don't really know how one pays for that beer, since I have never sat in those seats. But I do know it ain't "free".

Re: Stick..

This is a stupid thread here and it is a stupid thread on the Hive.

I prefer for it to at least be a little tougher for the stinking drunks to sit next to my daughter and I. Behavoir has been steadily going downhill at BDS - language mostly. I can't recall "F" bombs being thrown around in the 70's and 80's at Grant Field like they are now. Keep that crap away please. Go home, get drunk to your heart's content, cuss around YOUR kids.

I've only been a GT fan since the mid 80's (not originally from the south and didn't really become a fan until attending GT) but my recollection of going to almost every home game since 1984 is that the cursing is no worse today than the first game I attended in 1984. It was bad then and it is bad now.

In my experience alcohol makes people less inhibited. This isn't always a bad thing. Some fans cheer more in a positive way when they've had a couple of beers in them because they aren't as reserved. On the other hand there are many people who do things they normally wouldn't do like curse up a storm even in front of their own kids.

Of course let me also acknowledge that there are plenty of people who don't need any alcohol in them to exhibit any of the behaviors I've mentioned :)

Re: Stick..

I honestly don't see it changing much, and any change would likely be for the better as people wouldn't be getting as liquored up as possible before kickoff. As such, I am neutral on the issue and really couldn't care less either way. The jerks are going to be jerks regardless of if they have a beer in hand or not, they just use that as an excuse for acting like a jackass.
That said, do we really need another overpriced concession?

JJ, I can't believe no "F" bombs were not thrown around with our horrible offenses in 83,84,86 LMAO

RP, I agree that if a person is a jerk they are going to be a jerk. However we can't ignore that people DO become less inhibited, or at least most do, when they have some alcohol in them and that many times their personality becomes enhanced and so they act even worse than they normally would. And to be fair if you are a really cool person then sometimes alcohol enhances that part of your personality too so it isn't all bad.

I also agree with your comment that many use alcohol as an excuse for their behavior! Excellent observation!!!

I don't understand, though, how any change would likely be for the better. I disagree mildly with this statement but am open to your thoughts and would like to ask for a little more information on why you think that. I'm not saying, by the way, that any change would automatically be for the worse. I'm leaning towards change being somewhat minimal either way.

Like you I'm somewhat neutral on this issue (which is of course why I'm so open to hearing other people's thoughts :)).

Re: Stick..

I don't think any of this matters.

From a follow up on the Hive, the ACC has the no alcohol rule, not the NCAA. But in either case we can't do it anyway.

True, but this is an interesting academic exercise, IMHO :)

Re: Stick..

Some of our best discussions are about things we either know nothing about or can't impact in any way so I agree. BTW, if we're going to have beer, do you sell it in bottles or cups only? I prefer imports in bottles myself. I mean, I hate drinking from a plastic cup but we can't really arm the fans I guess. What about plastic bottles?
