Most dreadful coaching move by Chan Gailey this past year (on or off the field). Already see the backlash from this thought but my personal choice was opening up on defense against Clemson with a nickle backfield as a monsoon is decending on the field. Exposing 5'7" Kelley Rhino against 6'5" receivers for the Tigers sure had me wondering about what had we got ourselves into.

How do you know that was not Tenuta's call? FWIW, you guys can blame some of the offensive woes on Gailey because he was involved in the offense but,Tenuta had a free hand on defense in terms of personnel, schemes, and game day calls and adjustments

Not leaving Bilbo in after his strike to Watson for a TD vs. WF, the rest of the season. THWG

yeah .. kelly looked great intercepting a pass against clemson in the nickel package

the one time he got badly burnt .. he slipped on the flooded field, which could happen to anyone .. from a 5'7 DB to a 6'7 DB

good job on raking up crap

Punting on 4th and inches near midfield against Wake Forest.

If you go back and watch the tape, the total lack of confidence shown towards our offense, completely, and I do mean completely, changed the momentum of that game and resulted in a loss to Wake, and really increased the downward spiral of the season that was started in the klimpsum game.

why don't we go through this exercise for the 2001 season too?

how about those defensive lapses by Roof against clemson and virginia? the hook and lateral? the qb draw?

after the loss to wake .. we had huge wins against NC St and UVa and took it to FSU .. the season was a mixed bag with a very disappointing ending

the loss to wake was hard to swallow but the team did not mail it in after that loss ..

let's not come up with senseless statements that there was a real increase in the downward spiral after the wake loss .. beeware you can do better .. try harder

Just for the record, this is the post that I made at the time of the Wake game:

4th down and 8 INCHES at midfield in a game where Wake?!?! had completely eaten up our defense and held the ball all day...and we are scared to go for it??? What does that tell you about this staff???? It completely showed lack of faith in our offense and put the pressure on the defense that was already worn out from being on the field all day. Completely changed the momentum of the game.
This is not a second guess.....said so at the game at the time.
Not going for it was the dumbest call that he made since calling time-out and allowing klimpsum time to go for the touchdown right before half-time..a move that ultimately cost us the game.

just for the record, how did you feel after the hook and lateral beeware?

Second half of the Conneticutt game. Put in the second string and had them run the ball right up the middle against a 9 man front. This set the tome for the future. It wasted an opportunity to let the second and third teamers show what they could do. It did nothing to develop Bilbo's skills or confidence and it had to raise a question among the players about what the hell was the coach thinking here?

Go Jackets!

Wow, what a question. Space does not allow for an adequate answer. That fourth timeout Gailey called for Bowden to get his offense back on the field might be a winner, but then there is the infamous 14 seconds to go on your own end of the muddy field long out route vs. Fresno. I love the fundamentals of the numerous missed snaps throughout the year. Those three opening bombs vs. FSU really caught them off guard. More than a particular play, how about the complete lack of show ups in the second half vs. Maryland or the entire game vs. Georgia. The Wake game was simply a display on TV of the Wake staff putting on a coaching clinic at BDS. This could go on and on, suffice to say at this level of football we lacked some common sense - I think it stems from a lack of a SYSTEM or sense of purpose - so everything is reactionary.

For me, the worst call was the timeout at Clemson that allowed Bowden to reconsider a FG and score a TD instead on 4th down. If CG doesn't call the timeout, Clemson rushes on the field hurredly for a FG as the play clock was running. That was a bad day all around.

Someone above mentioned the defensive scheme in the Monsoon at Clemson...How about the offense that day? They came out throwing the ball in that same monsoon and we had guys dropping passes. All of this goes on while we have Hollings in the backfield. Unreal.

I'd have to go with the season-long Bilbo shaft. Then sending him out against Fresno and expecting him to be game ready.

Going pass happy against Climpsun with Hollings in the backfield, especially in a monsoon. Also, punting on 4th and one anytime past midfield, and this was done in numerous games every time the situation came up.
