..and by "successful" I mean at least 7 wins/year...consistently over the next, say, 10 years WITHOUT changing anything regarding our curriculum or "academic standards" as it stands today ?

To me, this is a FAR FAR bigger issue than Braine, Gailey or anything else.

My vote is no, to the above FWIW.

I think GT could win 7 games consistently without changing the requirements. Winning Championships is a different story.

I would say a good solid football coach can bring his type of kids into his own system. In theory, higher quality students stay in the program longer and get the chance to develop. We would likely be able to redshirt more kids as well. We've lost so many kids for various reasons during the O'Leary and early Gailey years that we are always playing catchup.

I say no. I think we can win at least 7 games probably 7 or 8 of the next 10 years from what I see now. Unless things change with our system, I don't see an 11-1 Tech team down the road. I see 9-3 at best. But with Miami and VT coming in, it will not be easy.

A Head Coach that knows what he is doing can win championships ANYWHERE. Ross proved it. O'Leary proved it. Friedgen proved it.
Championships can still be won at places like Ga Tech, but u simply have to have a HC that knows how to do it.

Heisman proved it, Alexander proved it, Dodd proved it, and Friegden proved it.

We will know after this year if Gailey can or can not do it. Some may say he can't, but they are only offering an opinion, because they do not know.

Bear Bryant did it at Kentucky, Texas A&M, and Alabama.

Are Parsegian did it at Miami of Ohio, Northwestern, and at Notre Dame.

Lou Holtz did it at NCSU, Notre Dame, and South Carolina.

Bobby Bowden did it at West Virginia and FSU.

Etc., Etc., Etc.

Championships can still be won at places like Ga Tech, but you simply have to have a HC that knows how to do it.

Seven wins should be the basement of this program (yes, I expect seven wins this year). All the other posters are correct that a good coach can win championships. Let's hope Chan is that coach.

Let's certainly not forget Gary Barnett who took a VERY bottom of the barrel Northwestern to probably the upset championship of our lifetimes when he & the Wildcats won the Big Ten in '95.
Barnett then repeated the process, at a much easier place to win, when he lead Colorado to the Big Twelve championship in '01.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">AMEN. THAT IS THE FACT JACK. NO MORE EXCUSES DOWN AT THE FLATS.

Barnett @ Northwestern 1st 3 seasons: 3-8, 2-9, 3-7-1
Barnett @ Colorado 1st year: 7-5 (following Neuheisel's 8-4)

Holtz @ W&M 1st 3 seasons: 3-7, 5-7 (this is what the NCAA official page says, it must really be 7-5), 3-7-1.

So, Ace, bdg, and Zurich, I hope you have your EXCUSES ready if your sour predictions don't come true.

No excuses!! Yes, I think that we can be successful. We have enough talent (not a lot but enough). RF would have loved to have had this much talent his first year at Maryland and look what he did! Good coaches will win!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm forecasting a dry spell, and it won't be the fault of the coaches or the kids.

But I do think we have a good shot at consistantly playing up, beating the odds.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">As I metioned in the other post, we have the talent to win 6-7 games this year. We had the talent to win a lot more last year and the year before. I think Barnett did a heck of a job at Northwestern, which was an eternal rebuilding program (or I guess you cant rebuild since they never really had anything until he arrived) So basically he built it. He also came from a DIV I program. I like that. I hope Gailey's 2nd year ends up like Barnetts 3rd since Gailey had a lot of injuries last year like Barnett had in his 2nd year. Barnett's 3rd was a Big 12 Championship. Since we were not rebuilding I would love to have a surprise like those other DIV I coaches. Oh yea, and Ross had pretty similar records to Barnett, but again he had been in DIV I a long time.

how bout a simple yes for me
