This was going to be my only game at BDS, but had to stay behind for a funeral last night. First year in 34 I will not see a game in Atlanta. With that said, I am glad I survived the near coronary caused by Gailey, Nesbitt, Bennett, and Bell in 4th Qtr. My reaction:

1. Gary Guyton and Greg Smith were my players of the game. Without Guyton we would have lost today.(Taylor and Tashard did some really good things, but made some really big mistakes)
2. Up 9 at the 35 in the 4th Gailey truly went brain dead.
3. Should have passed more - their secondary is terrible. No TD passes all year at home, then three today. I saw ECU beat them in September completing 5 passes of 35 yards or more.
4. We beat the Tarheels! 2-0 versus the old north state this year. I know their teams are bad, but where I live, beating these guys is next to beating UGA.

yeah think most GT fans aged a few years sweating this one out....Bell came back for a clutch FG & pulled one out...GT will really have to step it up for next Saturday or it could be a long day in the Flats...Give the players credit though they didn't stop & our .500 streak remains alive...I hope they'll end a streak against UGA next Saturday.

Well, I'm going to split my post up into positives and negatives:

Positives:

1) I've been waiting for a Tashard Choice to Taylor Bennett pass ever since the ND game. Glad to see it went for 6.
2) Nesbitt looked like he had good touch this time on the TD throw. Honestly, the camera man was lined up on Corey Earls, and I thought Nesbitt overthrew him, but nope it was to Greg Smith right at the letters
3) Glad to see Greg Smith actually fight to get some catches. He was unstoppable today, and I hope for a similar performance vs. UGA
4) Defense tightened down when it mattered most
5) Morgan Burnett. I really didn't see him getting beat very often, and he made a very nice play 1 on 1 to break up a perfectly thrown pass.
6) Taylor Bennett: Had some very nice throws, including hitting Greg Smith in stride for a TD, and hitting him several other times, and getting us in position for a FG
7) Jamaal Evans. Never again will I say that he is not a playmaker. That could have backfired, but it didn't, so we'll take it :)
8) Travis Bell. Hit the game winner, twice.
9) Gailey. Finally gave it to TC to set up the game winner, and we got a lot further in this time to give Bell a real shot.

Negative:

1) The fumbles. I really don't blame Taylor's for his, but Nesbitt has to protect the ball better and TC, well, he really never fumbles so we'll give him a pass.
2) Gailey: I was glad to see that the offensive playbook seemed to opening up, with both choice and nesbitt throwing from the wildcat. But the "field goal punt?" What happens if we do catch them off guard? A punt is a change of possession, so even if nobody catches it, best case scenario we pin them down. Might as well have our All-World punter go ahead and do his job, or just go for it. That call definitely gave UNC momentum for that score
3) The possession where Taylor lost the fumble, he had no business dropping back to pass on 3rd down, especially after they almost caught him for a safety. (and possibly should have had a grounding call). Run it up the middle or break it to the outside with Dwyer and punt it away the possession.
4) UNC was still able to complete way too many short passes in the flats. UGA is going to kill us next week if their athletes get their hands on the ball with that much room.
5) Travis Bell. Just didn't get a good kick off.

All in all, a wins a win, and I think we should have beaten them by 2 possessions (fumbles and bad coaching)

Man, this is a chanesque win if I ever saw one. He needed to win this game to save his job, so he did, but only by a last second field goal.

Chan should use David Eckstein's nickname, "just enough."

We should all ask ourselves as part of the process whether Chan stays or goes: Which team will be better NEXT year? The team coached by Butch Davis or a team being coached by Chan Gailey. UNC has some core talent and is overall very very young. This was the year of opportunity for Tech and we have squandered it. The same--very same--plan of driving down for a field goal that lost the Maryland game, worked today. Check your scoreboard to see how bad Maryland really turned out to be, how bad Miami is. Seven wins: Duke, Samford, Notre Dame, Miami, North Carolina, Clempsen, and Army. Not very impressive.

Durant Brooks was a big difference in the game

Durant Brooks is underappreciated by Tech fans. Four punts for a 60-yard average.

Tech was 4th and 5 on the GT 7. Brooks kicks a 77-yard punt downed on the UNC 16. Completely changed field position in Tech’s favor.

UNC’s punter shanked a 29-yarder near the end of the game that put Tech in position to win.

Huge difference in punting.

Thank you Durant Brooks.

He also did a good job of getting the hold down on the winning FG.

Well, I'm going to split my post up into positives and negatives:

Negative:

1) The fumbles. I really don't blame Taylor's for his...

Were you not watching Taylor scrambling down the sideline and holding the ball like a loaf of bread allowing the NC defender to promptly slap it out of his hand for a turnover?

Whatta game! Those freshmen and sophomores from UNC came to play and play they did. It was 58 minutes of some of the craziest goings-on I have ever seen followed by the best 2 minutes I have seen GT play all year. The last 2 minutes were handled superbly with precision offense and Chan now has his usual 7 wins.

So, if we can somehow string together 30 of those "2 minutes" will we have a chance against UGA?

P. S. It was great to see Big John Davis introduced at half time along with the other All-Americans. Nice to see that John is sticking to his diet.

the 33 yarder he pushed wasn't a 'real shot'????

He bounced back like a champ, but I don't agree that the first one was too much to ask.

Kudos T.Bell!! He could've folded but he bounced back

Where the hell did you get this idea?? This is almost as bad as saying we under appreciated Calvin. You need to think before you type.

Coach Dodd, from General Neyland --football is kicking and defense.

Unclebee, lighten up. My comments were intended to draw positive attention to Brooks. That's all. Try not to miss any more anger management therapy sessions.

My notes:
  • Burnett knows how to cover. Great skills too. Wish he had gotten his first pick.
  • As said earlier, Guyton was huge on D and Smith held on to a ball he had every reason to get separated from.
  • Colin Peek's reception and first down in the final drive established the momentum to keep it moving.
  • D Brooks is a freak.
  • Nesbitt won't be trusted by Gailey nor should be in critical situations next week. That's a real shame.
  • Very happy to beat anyone with 4 lost fumbles.
  • Very unhappy that we lost 4 fumbles.
Hate week has begun. Govern yourselves accordingly.

It is a shame if thats true b/c TB has given no reason to trust him either....mr. drop back and don't throw the ball away or at all bennett leading to fumbles, sacks etc.

Its also a shame choice has become mr fumblitis the last two games. 2 fumbles, both lost. Guess we shouldn't trust him either?

Maybe we shouldn't trust bell, i mean he did miss the FG vs MD, and the first one vs UNC, until getting a 2nd chance.

Point is...you have to trust your players through thick and thin. JN needs more reps and more chances he is one of our few big play threats. He will learn that in NCAA football there are backside tacklers...just has to concentrate more on ball security. It happens...he will grow through it.

you stop trusting your players when it is consistent bonehead plays...and personally I have seen enough of that on the field with other players I wonder how they still have anyone's trust.

Believe Burnett has at least 2 ints already. He played that fade in the endzone perfect and played quite well all day imo.

The TC fumble won't happen again. The three QB fumbles are a big issue. don't know how we didn't win by more than ten at then at same time I don't know how we won.

the 2 minute offense was the worst looking thing I've ever seen. Thank you Tashard Choice for playing with some sense and sanity. We were running around like we didn't have a clue but he got us in position to win.

You have alot of posts, and Im going to take that to mean that you know alot about GT football.

I am pretty new to the game (19 years old, 6 year fan) but I think that is quite the absurd statement my friend. One fumble and he shouldnt be trusted? What about the yards he racked up? What about the crucial long run he had?

Come on now, lighten up on the kid. If someone barely gets to play, they are gonna freak out a little bit and make mistakes in there.
