I listened to the call-in show this morning. It wasn't as pissy as I thought it would be. A few takeaways:

Reading between the lines of the response to a caller's question about the new blocking rules, it sounds like the new rules about low blocking downfield are having an impact on our offensive scheme. Refs are getting the calls wrong, players are hesitant about blocking downfield because they aren't sure exactly where they are on the field, and it basically negates the ability of linemen to block in the secondary because they can't really straight-up block a better athlete like a safety or corner. It sounds like this is contributing to the difference between 5 yards and a big gain.

Happy with Davis's kickoffs this week (I think every kick for both teams went deep into the end zone, and even the onside kick was pretty good - got the hop, just didn't get anybody to the ball). Missing the extra point was like getting sucker punched. Definitely an open competition for placekicking duties.

He says Marshall is doing pretty well at making reads. Said he was overstriding on some throws, resulting in overthrows, but he knows he can make the throws because he's seen it in practice. (He's not wrong when he mentions the lack of a clean pocket - on a couple of bad throws, Marshall had a guy grabbing his ankles.) 6-15 should have been 8-15 with a TD and a lot more yards, which is a better looking stat line. (He implied "if Camp and Stewart had caught balls that hit them in the hands.") The fumbled pitch was on Lynch for not maintaining the pitch relationship, not on Marshall. Said Marshall is the starting QB right now, no plans to put in Oliver as a change-up.

He thought the defense played better this week. He wished we hadn't let them death march us and kick a field goal after the first score in the second half. He said that the fake punt was a bad call, badly executed and put the defense in a bad position ("but you don't have to let them score"). Said Pitt was winning the field position game so the D played on a short field a lot.

He thought the offense was bad in the first half, but kept fighting to give us a chance in the second half. The pace of play at the end of the game was not addressed.

The second half of the game was fine, other than the turnovers. If we don't screw up both of the drives where we turned it over we most likely win the game. We gave them 3 points on the fumble, and threw a total brain fart interception just outside the red zone. Given where we were on the field, 3rd and 7 should've been two down territory.

So many mistakes and bad coaching decisions.

Interesting about the new blocking rules. I didn't even think about that in regards to affecting big play production and possibly the speed at which the linemen are playing/being more hesitant. That being said, coaching needs to take that into account and make the necessary adjustments to the offensive scheme.

Isn't that pretty much true of any bad power 5 team?

And just to be fair, he addressed this as you would expect. Not a big deal, we’ll do what we have to do, etc. I’d just bet that he’s a little more unhappy about the changes privately.

What even happened on that pick? Watching in stadium, Camp stopped the route and looked confused. Not sure if he was supposed to keep running, or if Marshall threw to the wrong route, or if it was an option route and they weren’t on the same page.

I didn’t see Camp on the field again after that play, which makes me think that between that and the drop, CPJ had had enough.

No doubt he's unhappy about it. Perceived "player safety" ruling by the NCAA, I'm sure. I'd also bet he didn't think it would affect his linemen like it has.

Definitely a miscommunication. Not sure on who's part though. Camp is probably the correct answer.

Funny how they are OK with a RB getting his legs wiped out on a tackle, but Lord knows we gotta protect those defensive players.

Its happened at least 3 times this season too, with Marshall chucking deep to no receiver. Don't know if Camp was the guy on the first two, but obviously that play isn't working at all for us.

Camp ran a comeback right past the first down marker. It was the exact route Marshall overthrew earlier in the game.

The pick didn't look like an overthrow watching live, it looked like he was throwing to a different route.

That one wasn’t an overthrow, Marshall thought Camp was doing a hitch and go or go route. I’m not sure which.

I was just pointing out that it was the same 3rd down conversion route. I don’t know which guy screwed it up. But a corner with no safety help is going to conceed the first down and defend the end zone.

I’m not sure that ball isn’t intercepted if Camp did run a vertical route. I was awfully inside.

Oh, I bet he knew right away.
this is one area where I disagree with PJ on our downfield blocking style. I'd rather see our linemen use their size to their advantage - wall a guy off, make him go around you, because if you try to cut and miss there, that guy is still on his feet and running.

I swear I think the throw Camp dropped was a botched hook and ladder. That would explain why he just stopped his route. It also explains why another player is running toward Camp - very obvious in the replay. The timing was off and Camp dropped the ball. It was such a screwup no one wants to claim that was the playcall. But I think it was.

Watching live, it looked like the reason Camp stopped on the drop was because the ball was under thrown. I’d assume the other guy was running toward him to block.
