Hello Guys,
I had the chance to catch about 1.5 hours of practice. I was a little late, but I thought I would share some thoughts with the board. It was a very light workout. The team was in helmets and shorts only, no pads at all. Very little you can tell from a workout like this, but I will do what I can.
1. I thought that Reggie still looks to be the clear #1. The interesting thing about Reggie is he really throws a nice ball. He was effective tonight. There was rust, but he still looked to be the #1 guy. Taylor was just not as consistent tonight. It is still very early though and tough to draw conclusions.
2. I think we have some nice athletes in the secondary, especially at CB. I think we will have a good mix of ability at CB between Scott, Jahi, P. Clark, and Avery. Obviously we won't be as physical at safety as we've been and those guys are still trying to pick things up. Safety really looks like the spot we've got to keep our fingers crossed about. We have plenty of work to do there.
3. The DE position sure looked thin tonight, while we are loaded at DT. My guess is if we got in a crucnh a guy like Vance Walker could move outside. We need to stay healthy at DE. With all our guys healthy we look formidable on the defensive front.
4. I thought the WRs looked impressive. CJ is CJ, but after him X, JJ, Dunlap, Smith, and Frierson looked very solid. It is a group with great size. I thought they looked pretty focused tonight. I was very impressed with the group physically.
5. Gause got a number of reps at RB and did some good things. Choice and Grant made some nice cuts as well, but it means very little when they are just in shoulder pads, so not much to report at that position yet.
6. Physically, this group of OLs is one of the best looking groups I've seen at GT in a long time. There is nothing to report since they were just in helmets, but I thought it looked like an athletic group that will be able to put out 8-9 guys that you can win with. It has been a long time since we've been able to say that.
7. It is too early to start talking about depth chart, but the true freshmen that got some solid reps tonight were Corry Earls Jamal Evans, and Shane Bowen. It is difficult to judge the true freshmen this early, so when I come to a early practice I like to look at how the freshmen carry themselves on the practice field. Some kids just carry themselves like they are ready to play now. I thought Earls had that look to him. He looks like a very smooth athlete and I think he could be factor. Like I said, it is just the first practice but he's got that something. We've seen Evans before, so we know he has it.
That is about all I have. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have as I check back in.
