A couple of fellow out of towners seemed to want more, so here's today's report:

I got to practice a bit early and sat down next to an older gentleman. We were just about the only folks there and it was a wonderful surprise to realize it was Furman Bisher. I was blessed to talk for a good thirty minutes with what I believe is the last of the great sports writers. His stories are great, his use of the language even better.

We talked about his son's passing and the donation he made to Tech in his name. We talked about changes at the AJC and his disappointment in losing some good writers. We talked about marriage, kids, $700 I just paid for books for mine, softball, Paul Johnson of whom he says good things, Josh Nesbitt's injury, Gardner, Tech's DL (ok I talked about those guys), selling peanuts at Grant Field (his son sold programs), USAFA, his style of writing and how's it's had to change over the years, etc. I must say it was a great thirty minutes that, for me anyway, could have gone for the whole practice. Anyway, thanks Furman. (He went to Furman by the way).

Practice:
Again since it's been reported, Nesbitt is not practicing and just doesn't look like he's ready to anytime soon either. Folks were saying that he was told to not use the arm and that he's okay. Here's hoping.

Jaybo Shaw had a pretty good practice again. He's fluid with the offense and has some spunk about him. I am very impressed with his maturity shown so far and his arm is okay too. Booker looks like a good guy trying to do his best to fit a system not intended for his game. But I like him, he's got some maturity. Bryce and Tevin are a bit back IMO.

When our offense gels, it's really a thing to watch. It's certainly a big play offense. Booker broke one off at the end of scrimmaging and just let everyone sitting at the Skiles Fountain know about it. Good stuff.

Our DL is stout however and our offense doesn't open many big holes up the middle. However in goal line drills the offense did okay and scored maybe three times out of 8 plays or so. Each TD comes with hooping and hollering by the O. Again good stuff.

I was blessed to see two very different days worth of practice. Unfortunately I also saw an important player hyperextend his knee doing backpedaling drills today. He kept trying to fix his knee the whole day, it won't be serious but it may slow him down for a while.

I also saw the ball on the ground a few times. One was plain bad QBing, the others were just dropped balls. I'm sure everyone agrees that we have to limit these.

The first team defense is set on the line and mostly set in the backfield. Linebackers are changing a lot, we have good depth there I think. I enjoyed watching LB drills where blockers go through different movement and players are taught to react.

As stated yesterday, TJBarnes is just immense and he is a pretty good player. Against the second or third team he is a real problem. I'm not sure I saw him against the first team O but he has a good future. But of course we need players next year for the DL.

Once again we have lots of young players and are still dealing with probation for a while longer. It also seems that plenty of walkons are participating more than I would have thought.

Ask me what you want if you have a specific.

Thanks for the updates, I am starting to get worried about Josh, with opening game so close. I don't know how many practices you've been to...how much of a step down is it if we have to play Jaybo? Hopefully he can step in without too much of a drop-off...but then there is no one after him ready to really take the reins. That could be a major problem this year, when we don't have any of PJ's recruits.

Josh is certainly bigger and stronger than Jaybo and he possesses a stronger arm. I think the main difference is the throwing part.

Did you think our OL had trouble with the DL because the DL is special, or the OL is still learning the offense, or a combination of both?

We don't play for 2 weeks yet. It could easily be a case where Josh could play if it was for real, but they want to rest him since it's not.

probably exactly the type of info that coaches would prefer not to end up on a message board as it can provide key info on how to gameplan AGAINST our defense... no?

If that's the case, they did a really good job keeping Nesbitt's injury on the DL...

I'm sure if it's a major injury the AJC will report it anyway...

well, as you might imagine, some injuries you can hide and some you cant. and obviously, if they are "major" then they will likely be reported by a newspaper, but that doesnt mean that you want everyone to know that x & y have some knee issues and may not be as quick as normal and stuff like that. a "hyperextended" knee can be something that doesnt take you off the field, but slows you down in certain situations.

I see... guess i never thought of it like that... We definitely would not want to do anything to Jeopardize the open practices as they have been great...

I don't think i posted anything unacceptable. I knew Josh was hurt more than I originally reported but kept it quiet until i heard the local media talk about it.

I just thought it interesting that a player hurt his knee right in front of me. He'll be fine, it was of no value to anyone at this time, IMO.

By the way, on insider boards this information is readily available and you have to be crazy to NOT assume that every team we play has someone on our insiders.

Ole Furman put part of our conversation in his article this Sunday morning. Here's what I should have told Furman:

In 2001, GT visited Navy and the Annapolis football scene was hopping. Tech beat up on the poor midshipmen 70-7. I had brought friends to the game and after another score late in the game I said to one "the only thing that bothers me is that we're beating up on the same guys that one day could go to war for us all." Of course, two days later 9/11 happened. My friend tells this story all the time to others.

Anyway, Paul Johnson came in and rescued Navy football and I really believe that his teams would have beaten our stubbornly coached teams at least half the time. That feeling is quite a turnaround from 70-7.

So do we let Jax St score a courtesy TD or no? I'm thinking 70 to nothing by the half. Should be a rough Friday.
