I won't be a smartass and say "we know that already" - yes, this is another week that illustrates their worthlessness.

Definitely not worthless to the SEC and ESPN. Without the preseason polls the conference would actually have to earn its lofty rankings.

Wait, the question you asked in the OP and the question in the pole are exact opposites., so I voted the wrong way.

This might just be the worst pole in the history of StingTalk poles.

Or the best.

They aren't worthless, because they heavily impact the final polls.....however stupid that may be.

How do you know they heavily impact the final polls? That is widely assumed but tough to demonstrate.

I don't think it's that tough to demonstrate it with the AP and coaches polls, because it's very rare for a team to drop without losing.

With the selection committee it's tougher to prove, because they showed more willingness to reshuffle the deck week to week.

In the end, things usually worked themselves out under the old system, and they'll work out even more often under the new system. There will just be a lot of week to week angst, which means money for the networks and (if we're being honest) fun for the fans.

No, it's hard to prove because there is no standard (even theoretically) against which to evaluate whether the poll is right or wrong or unduly biased on any given week. In the immortal words of the Coens, "yeah, well, that's just like your opinion man." (Gif someone?). The poll only purports to be the opinion of the pollster.

Without polls, how could we have more fun in the early season than by pointing out what idiots some polls and pollsters are? I still voted that they should be banned. After week 4 would be a good time to roll them out, I think.

I think they only matter for the teams with weak ass Big XII schedules. Baylor/TCU could be decent but not elite and still finish 11-1. Everyone would assume they are top 5 because of the preseason poll.
