Cooper Taylor
S | 6'4" 175
Hometown: Atlanta, GA
School: MaristSchool
ESPN Grade 77
Evaluation: Taylor is a safety prospect who could slide down to outside backer with continued physical development. He currently possesses a lanky frame that he should grow into. He will enter college with better skills as a pass defender than run supporter. He shows the route and coverage awareness you would expect from a quarterback and consistently positions himself correctly, reads the field well, and keeps passes in front of him. Cooper flashes good timing and a quick break on the throw and does a nice job of utilizing his long body to separate the ball from the receiver. Overall coverage range is adequate-to-good and he masks his marginal burst off the hash with his long stride. However, I question his recovery speed, transition quickness and ability to turn and run with Division 1 receivers. Cooper might be best as a centerfield safety at the next level that can roam and react to underneath routes. With that said, Taylor will be a sound college safety who consistently positions himself and the entire defense correctly while making plays with his good instincts and athleticism. Again if his body explodes with a college weight-training program, and he adds good physicality to his game, linebacker could be a possibility.
I am pleasantly surprised that ESPN ranked Cooper as high as they did. For those who are not familiar with the ESPN ranking system, a 77 is a very good grade. A grade of 77 puts Cooper in the same company as players like Josh Nesbitt, Willie White, Logan Walls, and Steven Sylvester…Not bad company to say the least. Cooper will be a good edition to our team and look forward to seeing him in White and Gold.
