I'm pleased with what Pat Nix has done this year as OC.

However, don't we need a new QB coach? Even if you tell me our starter could not be coached to be any better (and I'm skeptical of that), we should have had an alternative to turn to Saturday night. I have to believe a well-coached Mike Cox at QB could have given us a better chance to win that game.

Is there another coaching staff in the country that would not have tried a different QB at least for a series or two Saturday night?

I don't think Reggie was so bad our FB could've come in and done better than him, under any circumstance...

Our backup QBs, though, well, maybe...

Reggie just didn't look healthy. Period. If he isn't dangerous on the run against Miami, they can afford to give him cushion b/c against Clemson he would take off upfield and run toward the sideline, gaining minimal yardage.

And if 2 guys were on Calvin Saturday every play, just throw it up in the air, either he comes down with it and we move the ball, or it gets picked off and we lose the game anyway.

If Joe Ham would hurry up and get his degree, we could have him on as a grad assistant ... :)

So far Mike's one throw was not pretty, but it got to the open receiver. Maybe someday we'll see what he looks like running a draw, too.

We did have an alternative, but the coaches chose not to use him.

I just can't remember a time when we've had a real alternative to a starting QB - remember how poorly Godsey performed the times he came in for Joe? Of course Suggs was a viable alternative to Ball, but it's a rarity when an experienced starter ends up losing his position to a freshman, but that was a unique situation.

I can't even recall who backed up Shawn Jones.

Bilbo wasn't a real alternative to Suggs or to Ball (sorry, Stateline!)

Crenshaw provided a changup at the QB position, but would he have made a viable alternative?

Even at other schools I can't think of too many who have a true viable alternative QB, UGa being a recent example with Greene and Shockley, but OTOH, they don't even have a viable starter this year.

Basically, ya gotta have ONE guy you depend on who gets the vast majority of game reps and that in and of itself prohibits real development of a backup, unless the starter is injured.

I think for GT the situation is taking care of itself with recruiting this year.

The Mutts didnt really have a true alternative qb until the 2004 season, before that Shockley had a ton of athleticism but didn't quite have it mentally. Seems like he clicked over sometime around mid 2004 and then was doing very well in 2005. 2 real starting qbs are incredibly rare.

The problem with adding a coach is that we are limited in the number of on-field coaches we have.

I'd like to add Joe Ham, but we'd have to consolidate coaches we already have. What positions do you consolidate? Who gets the boot?

And one has to think Geoff Collins is waiting in line for an on-field slot. I imagine a promise was made. Former DC, too.

Ever heard of Utah?

Florida's got a pretty good situation going on right now too.

Bennett couldn't have done worse. The best thing about putting him in would have been to allow Reggie to heal up for Miami. Everyone knows the Miami game is more important for our ACC hopes than the Clemson game.

For much of the past 5 years we haven't had a viable #1 much less a viable #2.

I too think that we need a new QB coach. No one seems to be improving at that position.

The point, in my mind, is this:
Bennett couldn't have done worse.

Everyone knew that we were going to lose the game with Reggie at QB. If you're going to lose anyway, why bother with Reggie?

I believe more strongly than ever that we need a new QB coach. We have not had any effective QB play since Gailey has been the head coach.

Maybe Reggie Ball is simply uncoachable, but if so a QB coach should have developed someone to unseat him by now.

mm42, my friend who attends a lot of practices witnessed Joe Ham walk right up to Reggie and try and give him some pointers. Reggie blew him off and ignored him. Hamilton walked back to the sidelines shaking his head in disbelief and refering to Ball as an asshole. Reggie is uncoachable.
