QB Jeff Sims will start this season, but I don’t think he’ll be the starter by the end of the year.

I think the QB room might actually be more talented this year than it was last year. Since losing Yates and Peery, the Yellow Jackets added two transfer quarterbacks: former Akron QB Zach Gibson and former Clemson QB Taisun Phommachanh. In addition to those two, the Yellow Jackets also added Zach Pyron in their recruiting class, and he has received good reports thus far. The Yellow Jackets have four guys who could be the starter come Labor Day. Personally, I think it could be a really cool story for Taisun Phommachanh to come in and start that game, since it is against his former school (Clemson). At this point, though, I would put money on Sims to be the starter on Labor Day. Past that, though, your guess is as good as mine.

I don't think anyone knows who is starting at QB this season. We have a new OC installing a new system, so there is no true incumbency. If the OC thinks the QB will be running for his life because of the CBK line, advantage goes to Sims; otherwise, the seat is wide open.

Again, as already pointed out several times, the new OC's scheme is based around many of the same concepts as CDPs. It's not like starting over. The main differences are going to be in game day coaching/decision making and personnel sets.

Sims has shown enough promise that I imagine Long and Weinke were licking their chops during Spring. What we don't know is how they felt AFTER Spring practice. I didn't notice any comments indicating they were blown away, so they are either keeping it close to the vest or they've discovered that maybe Patenaude was limited by more than just himself.

1,262 passing yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games … Recorded a 69.4 completion percentage (109-for-157) with no interceptions

I don't think we should completely ignore the above, unless we are back to relying on 100+ rushing yards from the QB to win games. That's why I think that QB position is still open.

Why is this even a thread? Obviously if someone outperforms Sims and gives us a better chance to win then we will see a qb change.

Is this Captain Obvious Week?

Eh. No different than having a few beers with buddies and someone asking, "You guys think Sims will be the starter?" What would you do if that happened? Get up and leave?

I hear you but I think its a bit of a slight to Sims who, regardless of where he ends up, has earned his stripes. Can we just show the guy a little bit of respect during the offseason?

He did beat Florida State in his first start and will forever have my respect for that. It’s annoying that three other guys who have never taken a snap in a GT uniform are given deference to a guy that has bled for us.

After watching the GT/Pitt film and than watching the Tulane/Okla film from last year ( I posted both in another thread) It is my opinion that Chip Long's offense runs a few similar concepts to the spread that Patenaude used, however it has more motion, more tight ends and more under the center concepts in short-yardage and the red zone as well as more power running play concepts that all play into the Jackets' current personnel better than the scheme that CDP was trying to implement.

Its not just about playing. Its about flow.

When Friedgen was calling plays, there was a flow to the offense - he knew what to call and when to call it to keep the defense on their heels. Pat had a good mind for good plays but he was lacking in the rythym department. The playcalling was disjointed and predictable.

I think we will see a big improvement in that area with Long.

In 2009, we were 2nd in the nation in converting third down (52%). In 2014, we were #1 in the nation (58%). Last year, we were #100 (30- something percent). That has to change significantly if we are going to dig ourselves out of this hole.

Imma stop you right there.

No öööö. If you're implying that it's kinda crazy that we lost Yates and actually got BETTER, then please stop. The day Yates left we got better at QB.
I have no idea what anyone saw in Yates. The size of JT5 without the speed and playmaking ability. Just a fair HS QB on a good team who managed to get a D1 offer out of it. I don't think he would have ever started if CPJ had stayed. He managed to start last season due to Sims injuries and Peery obviously not stepping up.

I think the next Friedgen scheme may be what Jimmy Chadwell has at CCU
