Question about Redshirts

What restrictions are placed on someone that is red-shirting (aside from the obvious one that keeps them from playing in games)? Specifically, are redshirted players allowed to practice with the team, work out with the team, etc, with no limitation?

I am just trying to gauge how developed our redshirted players will be next year, specifically on O-line.
 
I want to add to this redshirt question and ask which redshirted players are "ones to watch" next season. In other words, who was red-shirted this past year that could be 1st string next year?

TJ Barnes-DT

These 2 are the most likely to start next year.

Also look out for Anthony Allen (The UL transfer) to make some noise @ B-back.

I do not think I would say most since we lose very few people.

DT- Barnes definitely will...the numbers dictate that.

DE- I suppose Wilson has a shot at Egbuniwe in the 2-deep, but he has to beat the Jr-R out.

LB- no redshirted players will crack 2-deep. You will have Griffin/Sylvester; Jefferson/Jackson; Barnes/Rocker. I suppose Munroe or Machen could challenge Rocker for that spot...or another backup like Tongo could move.

CB- Butler/Tarrant and Reid/Peterson have that locked up unless Riley knocks their socks off.

S/ROV- Reese/Taylor and Burnett are all locks. Leslie will try to push Blackwood/Edwards for a 2nd string spot.

Defense summary- There are six kids redshirted, only one is guaranteed in the two deep.

QB- I doubt Tevin Washington cracks the two-deep of Nesbitt/Shaw. Remember that year one to year two shows the most improvement. I would bet Sims/Aycock/Luellan would stand a better shot at being #2....and they are not redshirts.

AB- I do not see Lockhart cracking the two-deep with Jones, Cox, Wright, Peeples, and Smith returning...plus it has already been said Allen and Dwyer could see some AB time.

BB- Dwyer has the top spot. Quincy Kelly is definitely returning from what he told me Saturday night...he could have played against UGA. Anthony Allen will also get a lot of BB carries. Watson will definitely get a lot of PT...but can he break two-deep if Dwyer/Allen are both listed there? either way...Watson will be on the field plenty.

WR- I could see both Sims and/or McKayhan playing in the tw-deep as redshirt freshman. However, it would be Thomas/Melton/Earls/White spots to lose...and I am sure Fisher (PJ fav) and Clyburn will have something to say about it. Sims and McKayhan will see time...remains to be seen if they can crack two-deep next year.

OL- Here is where we will see some redshirt freshmen on two-deep and possibly starting. Uzzi will definitely make two-deep at one of the guard spots..and McRae will be at center. Phil Smith will challenge Yandell and Sellers for a back-up spot behing Claytor or Barrick. HOWEVER...do not count out some of these true freshman for a backup spot...like Foster, Finch, Beno, and Jackson. Also keep in mind that if PJ did not play Uzzi as a true freshman as much as our OL struggled....it must be awfully hard for a true freshman to come in and contribute in the two-deep.

Offense summary- There are eight kids redshirted, I could see four in the two deep if I was guessing.

Well...you have to think that Luellan, Sims, and most likely Aycock did not come to sit on the bench...and they cannot all be in the three deep.

We will just have to see...they are a special bunch. Luellan gets a jump as he will likely enroll early and participate in spring practice. Sims wanted to...but his crummy high school did not offer him a way to take Spanish early....he is an honors student. Aycock cannot enroll early either.

We do know that Aycock and Sims would also make great BB's or AB's....but we need two of those three kids coming in to stay at QB.

earlier in the year i was thinking we might could red-shirt Shaw to help him bulk up a little and keep some continuity on the O with him being able to help out the new guys, but now i dont think his body will really be able to gain much weight and we probably need him to be active given Nesbitt's ankles
 
It is really incredible how we survived this season and won 9 games. It is a credit to the players and coaches.

Our depth will be so much better next year than this year. At almost every position we have capable experienced backups.

I am still very worried about LB and DT next year, particularly LB. I just never saw any of them playing great pass defense and that was with our great DL. BUT, they were all young and learning so that should help quite a bit.

The biggest excitement for me, BY FAR, is that we will finally start to have the numbers needed to field dominant SPECIAL TEAMS. Probation has killed us on this for many years now.

We will actually have athletic guys that can work on special teams allowing our best to get a breather now and then.
 
Do you think that Peeples might rs next year? I realize that it's unlikely, as we still aren't loaded at that position, but when you look at Jones, Cox, Dwyer, Allen, Smith, Wright, Lockhart...seems like we might could r/s Peeples next year.

Granted 3 of those guys are natural B's, but I don't see how Dwyer isn't on the field 75-80% of the time, and some of that is going to have to be at AB in order to give time to Allen, Cox, and Watson.

I guess I'm just one of those guys that hates for kids to "fly" through the program. Like Brad Jefferson is already going to be a Jr. next year, and we've hardly really gotten to see the real #51 yet...just a few glimpses here at year end.

No need to worry about LB's...we are just not used to seeing new players. We were spoiled with returning starters nearly three years in a row.

That is why Philip Wheeler, as great as he was, had to redshirt his second year on campus as he had not developed yet from an experience standpoint.

Brad Jefferson got much better at the end...we just have to remember that this stud missed 1/2 the season with an injury then had to play catch-up. The same thing happened to AT Barnes, and now he is hurt again. Both of these guys have the ability to play on Sunday. Sedric Griffin will return next year as well...as a senior...one of only three senior starters next year on either side of the ball. You are correct on Kyle Jackson...he has to work on his pass coverage...he is just not as strong laterally. Steven Sylvester is going to be special...another future NFL player if he gets the things done that he needs to.

Also remember that our LB's had to work much harder for everything this year. Our previous defense had the DL clear things up for the LB's to come up and make plays. This year we put our DL's in the gaps to make plays and forced our LB's to have to shed more blocks and make plays. Totally different...and would have made things much harder for Wheeler, Guyton, etc. in years past.

Regarding DT's, I am being told not to worry about TJ Barnes as he is special. I am also told we will use different alignments on passing downs where TJ Barnes, Derrick Morgan, Robert Hall, and Jason Peters would be in the game at the same time. Without a doubt though, DL is the one area that gives cause for concern next year as we find new playmakers. Remember though...every team gets hit in at least one spot every year.
 
I 'm not normally hyped but a backfield of Allen at B with roddy and Dwyer at A with JN at QB is SCARY.It is a 400 yd /game run attack waiting to happen-assuming the OL/Wr do their jobs.

Personally I'm hoping that our blocking improves so we can throw the ball better next year. I'm happy with the run, but many times, we were successful because of poor tackling or Dwyers thighs were just too big. We need that last option of throwing to really keep teams honest.

Having said that, it really is scary to think teams will have to defend the run, one on one, versus Josh, JD, Allen, Roddy, Cox Jr...

Another interesting thought. Generally, we beat UGA when we have a two year period of a good quarterback (Newberry, Jones, Hamilton/Godsey) and then it sways back to UGA. But we just beat UGA in what should have been a down year for us (young team). We should have beaten UGA with Ball and Johnson but didn't get it done.

NOW however, we are ahead of the curve. The next two years, we could be favored over UGA in both even though they are a stout team. Enjoy the run folks (maybe that's next years Tech motto).

Do we know if any of the line recruits are graduatiing from HS early and will be able to participate in spring drills? That may make it more likely for one to crack the two deep.

We will not know for sure until mid-December....all we know right now is Dieke.

Regarding breaking tackles...some of that is the big hips that JD and Roddy have...some of that is we are in full pads three days each week during the season hitting...and this type of offense wears defenders down. It is like a heavyweight boxing match. I think this is partially why UGA DB's were bouncing off Roddy and JD in the second half. I definitely like the big thigh/big butt backs that can grind the defense down. That is also what I like about Orwin Smith.
