Why did he look so inept against UVA? It’s not like he had to suddenly come off the bench, Sims was hurt in the Duke game and we had two weeks to get Zach ready for the worst team in the ACC. The only answer I have is the gameplan we had for him against UVA stunk and the gameplan yesterday was genius, or Zach was just timid and lacked confidence and decided yesterday to take the bull by the horns. Previously I had wondered if he had the skills necessary to compete at this level but he proved yesterday he does. Kind of a head scratcher.

In my own personal experience, sometimes I have to attempt something and utterly fail at it to really learn how to do it. Between players and coaches there's a lot of new going on in the program this second half of the season, perhaps that's what's going on?

He didn’t care. Our coach helped him find his care. Which given the last few years should be seen as a very strong positive for Coach Key.

To me he seemed much more comfortable last night, probably had to do with the game plan going in that he wasn't "the guy" solely, and knew they would rotate. Something clicked on the drive before half, and when he dropped the dime on the sideline the lights came on.

That was the game plan (take the pressure off him by playing both QBs).

And - the pass was the turning point in the game.

The play that changed my perception on Gibson: UNC brought the house and he knew he was going to get crushed, but he stood in there, made the screen pass, and took the hits.

I still don’t want to see him in the field again, but he can keep his scholarship.

My 2 cents…keep in mind the kid hadn’t played all season nor had he experienced play at game speed either. I’d have to imagine the speed of the game was a little bit of a shock his first time out, and he just went out and played last night with nothing to lose.

I agree with your analysis. A lot of this was game planning specific to Gibson. Tech invited the rush and was able to set up the short screen passes. Against UVA he felt forced to throw to covered up receivers or search for the long ball. He was able to be more comfortable in his abilities and it showed.

And that is why one can’t make a living in vegas!

Well, apparently you really don't like crow pie. Look at it like this, if Gibson misses the bus, we don't win with any other QB on the team, with the possible exception of a healthy Pyron. Yes, I'm including a healthy Sims.

I think you’re over emphasizing his performance.

The game plan was very different. 7 of our 15 completions were to RBs, and 6 more were to Rutherford on short, easy routes from the slot. We only completed 2 passes to our outside WRs, and those were both short (6/7 yds) passes to Malachi Carter.

Against UVA it felt like we had a lot of slow developing routes that our OL couldn’t protect for, and Gibson’s lack of mobility meant the D could pin their ears back. It was understandably a game plan created for Jeff Sims.

That’s my same complaint with Sims. We’re trying these long developing plays. Sims stand back there and the pocket collapses. We need a blend of options, quick throws, slants, screens, plus the QB needs to take off when the play isn’t there. An occasional 30-50 yd pass is ok but not every damn down.

We finally went to something like that late in 1st half. Saw some sweeps, screen passes, etc and our QBs threw away their cement boots and put on some cleats they could run in.

I'm thinking he was more confident because he knew at worst, Taisun could go in. In the UVA game, he probably thought he was the last resort so he played really tight and scared.

Maybe had some impact, but I think much bigger was spending a week as the starter in practice and having the gameplan crafted for him.
