I enjoyed hearing Chan speak earlier today. He was very personable and felt right at home with the crowd since he spent a lot of time in his youth just down the street from where we were at the time.
As for whether he would want to deviate from his topic and address any of the troublesome issues currently going on, clearly we saw early he would not. One of the first things he said was that he would be “taking no questions.“
Chan went through the list of many of the coaches he has worked for in the past and talked about what he learned from them. There was the workaholic and mean as a snake coach at a smaller school which he later balanced with the family man that was Ken Hatfield at Air Force. Quite honestly, the way Chan talked about Hatfield, it sounded like he uses the approach we hear about Richt and his staff. I've got a feeling Chan learned a lot from his days with Ken.
Chan mentioned little about football other than to talk about the importance of working hard towards a goal and never giving up. He cited an example of a swimmer that was trying to swim about 22 miles in the fog but got cold and quit shortly before the finish without realizes how close she was. He says he tells that story to the team.
I did hear from someone there that Riles is trying to play and may make it. They aren't pushing him hard, though he knows that surgery later in life may come whether he plays football or not. So he has decided, "why not play??
