Question: What is the absolute worse call (officials) that you\'ve ever seen?

I was also wondering if anyone else had seen this.

A long time ago, when "Bum" Philips was coaching the Houston Oilers, back when they were good - they needed a win against, I THINK (could be wrong here) it was against Pitt...

Anyway, Houston was down by less than a TD late in the game....Pitt (or whoever) had to punt....Punt gets fielded, around their 30, and the punt returner gets an opening along the sidelines, and was all by himself for the last 40 yards...In other words, his return for the last 40 +/- yards was completely uncontested - so he runs it in for the go ahead TD....Only suddenly there is an officials "conference" - and the next thing I see - they called it back BECAUSE --- now get this.....The official said that as the returner was on ~ the 30 - headed in for the TD, the official (that was trailing the play) said that he "accidentally" blew into his whistle, thus blowing the play dead....Now this was AT Houston, and you can imagine the crowd noise as the player broke free and had an obvious TD

Houston gets the ball around mid-field and was unable to score - loses game....

I thought Bum (appropriately) was going to blow an aneurysm...It was surreal....

The only game (other than Raiders/Pats last year) where I felt a game was truly stolen...

Anybody see this ?

Didn't see that game, but to answer the original question:

In Football - 5 downs. Still cannot figure out how the entire crew missed that. Also cost Tech an uncontested NC.

Basketball - USA/Russia Olympics. They had to be paid off. Had to be.

Baseball - So many, but Hrbek pulling Gant off first was pretty damn bad and sticks out the most.

football - Every call against the jackets

basketball - Every blocking call against Duke opponents.

baseball - the called strike against Fred McGriff thrown by Livan Hernandez to end the 1997 NLCS

The Stolen Gold! And the 91 World Series !There were a lot of things in that world series! That had to be the worst.

I guess this is a topic for another board but is there a bias in MLB aganist the Braves?

Re: Question: What is the absolute worse call (officials) that you\'ve ever seen?

Football: Easily Colorado's 5th down win in '90
Baseball: Easily the Hrbek being allowed to pull Gant off 1st base
Basketball: I see new ones everytime I watch a Duke game

As far as Tech football...
1997 - The blatant interference call on us towards the end of the game. We were winning and there was NO TECH defender even near the UGAG receiver! SEC refs and our guys were the better team that day!

GAG ends up winning and our guys were classy in defeat, Coach O'Leary said it's part of the game and we'll get'em next year, AND WE DID!

The "fumble" call against GT in the GT/Arizona game at the start of the '94 season. We had the # 1 team on the ropes at BDS and the refs screwed us. The very end of the B*** L**** era.

Gotta go with the 5th down call in '90 Colorado/Mizzou.
