Question: What is the absolute worse call (officials) that you\'ve ever seen?
I was also wondering if anyone else had seen this.
A long time ago, when "Bum" Philips was coaching the Houston Oilers, back when they were good - they needed a win against, I THINK (could be wrong here) it was against Pitt...
Anyway, Houston was down by less than a TD late in the game....Pitt (or whoever) had to punt....Punt gets fielded, around their 30, and the punt returner gets an opening along the sidelines, and was all by himself for the last 40 yards...In other words, his return for the last 40 +/- yards was completely uncontested - so he runs it in for the go ahead TD....Only suddenly there is an officials "conference" - and the next thing I see - they called it back BECAUSE --- now get this.....The official said that as the returner was on ~ the 30 - headed in for the TD, the official (that was trailing the play) said that he "accidentally" blew into his whistle, thus blowing the play dead....Now this was AT Houston, and you can imagine the crowd noise as the player broke free and had an obvious TD
Houston gets the ball around mid-field and was unable to score - loses game....
I thought Bum (appropriately) was going to blow an aneurysm...It was surreal....
The only game (other than Raiders/Pats last year) where I felt a game was truly stolen...
Anybody see this ?
