Ran into a knowledgeable Steelers fan

I watched the Denver/Pittsburgh game in Chicago and got into a conversation with a knowledgeable Pittsburgh fan.
This guy knew a lot about the Steelers and football in general.
I mentioned that Ken Whisenhunt was from Georgia Tech and we could use him.
He said Whisenhunt was still unproven, but Russ Grimm (offensive line coach) forgot more about football than most coaches knew.
I also mentioned that Gailey was offensive coordinator at Pittsburgh. He remembered Gailey well, and thought very little of his performance at Pittsburgh. He did say that Gailey hurt K Stewart, and CG would do a poor job of developing QBs.
Interesting take from a neutral party.

No Steeler fan is ever neutral. Those people are insane.
They all moved to JAX when they got old.
They probably have more fans than the Jaguars down here.

He is right about Russ Grimm, Russ will be a head coach soon. I hope Ken gets the opportunity in Oakland just to get his feet wet. He has opened up that offense somewhat and it paid off.

Go Steelers!

That's just stupid. The ONLY decent year K Stewart had in the NFL was when Chan was the OC.

I agree 100% with everything you have said here. I grew up a big Redskin fan but my second favorite team was the Steelers so I am cheering for the Steelers because of that, for the Steelers because of Ken Whisenhunt, and because as a die hard Redskin fan I LOVE Russ Grimm (a charter member of the Hogs!!!).

It certainly seems that Al Davis is holding his job open until the Super Bowl is done so he can get one of those two guys.

That was part of the guy's point. Stewart was an excellent athlete, but under Gailey didn't get better with each year.
The guy's description of Gailey coaching Stewart is eerily similar to Reggie.

Well Stewart failed worse at every other team he was at after the Steelers. Is that Gailey's fault too?

The book on Gailey can't be written until the Ball era is over. If every quarterback starts looking the same, then fine. But until then, we really just don't know. Reggie is the cause of some of the weaknesses we have, that I do know.

I've never met a Steeler fan that didn't think they were knowledgable.

IIRC, Gailey was the OC the one year Stewart had a good year. Cordell's first year as a starter in PITT was 1997. The Steelers went 11-5. Then Gailey left for the Cowboys and Stewart went downhill fast losing his job to Tomczak in 1999. He won it back in 2000 had another good year in 2001. In '97 he had the most TD passes in any season of his career (21) and also ran for 11. Therefore, the guy you spoke with has no idea what he's talking about.

I'm not claiming this proves anything about Gailey, but this factoid is simply wrong and shouldn't be repeated.

one thing is certain..Gailey carries debate with him everywhere he goes as to whether he's a good coach or not. So far in his GT era, that same debate continues and there is no reason to believe it is going to subside.

NC:
Which factoid are you declaring false:
Gailey can't develop QBs or
He didn't make Stewart better?

Well, he clearly made Stewart better. He went from something like 15 passes attempted his second year with the team and then started and led them to 11 wins his second. Whether he would have improved from there is subject for debate because Gailey left after that season. So the guy who says he didn't develop Stewart is clearly talking about something that isn't true. He made him an NFL starting QB. His product then dropped after Gailey left.

Whether that has anything to do with our current situation of not is subject to debate. But to say he didn't make Stewart better is clearly wrong.
