Random thought about the defense

I think the 2nd half of the Tennessee game stands out as their worst play so far, but it is still, in my opinion, an improvement over the Al Groh years. I would like to see a more consistent pass rush and more forced turnovers. They looked good against the best team we've played so far, Jacksonville State.

Yeah, we're definitely at our best when we're opportunistic and creating turnovers (as evidenced by the 2014 team). That may sound obvious, but turnovers can certainly help with any talent differential that may exist against the big guys.

The second half against Tennessee was definitely not good, but I think a big part of that was that Tennessee does have a ton of talent and their dumbass coach actually started using their RB effectively in the 2nd half. They did the same thing against Florida at the end of the game after absolute futility for 3.5 quarters, and Florida has a very good defense.

This is a good comment but more reflects that we will more after next week.

The OT was bad for sure. We couldn't stop the run late. But apart from that random crossing route that went for a 50+ yard TD and the mini Hail Mary into double coverage that their guy brought down they had absolutely nothing during regulation. That game was just as close to 42-17 as it was to them sending it to OT. Defense played great overall. Optimistic going forward.

Pittsburgh helped us out a lot by keeping the ball in front of our linebackers, but we are certainly swarming the football. Our defensive backfield seems as solid as ever with the Austin twins, Griffin, and Gray. Linebackers are solid as hell also with Alexander and Mitchell. D'line, the weakest part of our team probably, is still doing a pretty good job. Saint-Amour seems to be getting to the ball well. These were all random thoughts, so I could be out of line a little with them.

I believe Saint Amour and Simmons are giving us great edge rushers. Still need to make sure to wrap up when we arrive at the QB and get the sack but definitely disrupting the timing. TD Roof when he is in is also getting to the QB. Need to continue that trend this weekend. Still a small sample but we are looking solid on both sides of the ball this year. We do need to improve our ST's coverage especially tackling the return man.

The reported stat (if true)of 1 for 13 on 3rd down in Pitt for DEF is beyond belief for a Roof D. We were next to last in country at one time last yr.A real defense? -maybe.We'll see this week vs a real offense.
